Hello,
Want to get this for my son for Christmas. He is already using the demo version and loves it. For someone starting out with this program should we go with the standard edition or go with the commercial version?

I am not sure that shaders would be that important?

Can some one give me some insight into this question?

Thank You!

I suggest the Commercial version for access to advanced features not available in Standard.
This would help encourage him a lot

I agree with Nems. Commercial version gives him all the nice stuff to practice and learn with, and doesn't skimp out on some important game capability features. Can you tell us how your son reacts to this? Haha. Lucky him.

Commercial is a good choice...if the budget allows it. Though, if your son is happy now with the extra edition and more attracted by the scripting than by creating content and game art, the extra should be enough...and you could still offer him an upgrade to comm later on (so you already know what to offer him for his birthday!).

Thanks guys,
My son is 9 1/2 years old and already a computer whiz (like his dad. ) His level of knowledge is quite high and he buries his head into this stuff and just drives right through it. He is actively using 3d game maker and has basically ran what it can do into the ground and wants something more now so I started searching and found this software, downloaded the demo for him and he was off...

He has done a lot of 3-d modeling in lightwave, programming in VB and is already writing his own story boards for movies and games. We got him a video camera a few years ago and he has even been producing, shooting and editing his own movies too.

The cost of the commerical version is not terrible, but I was not sure if he would get the full use out of the addtional features right away. What do you guys think would be the primary difference between the Extra version and the commerical that he would really miss out of the gate?

Thanks Again for the quick responses!!!

Hello

The commercial edition really opens up two new avenues in games: Shader support and Unlimited Physics. Both of these really add a whole new dimension to a game, and are well worth it. If your son loves programming, he should love the new programming language included with 3dgs - Lite-C

Thanks,
Adoado

But in A7 Extra Version unlimited Physics are available. I've got
the A7 Extra Version and I miss only one thing. The Shader support.

What will the shader support get him? Does anyone have any screen shot differences of models with and without shader support?

Lots of images in showcase forums, awesome results and the only form of graphics I am betting for your son at 16 onwards.
Commercial covers everything for 'on-hands access' rather than waiting to upgrade or seeking plug-ins to use features available in com and pro.

You cant go wrong with it as a learning choice for an obviously serious user, particularly when the suite (its not exclusivly a 'game' engine but also an application developer too)can be used for so many different approaches.
