You are totally right about the corruption and the remains of the soviet method of "doing things" here in the post-soviet countries, and actually I consider Latvia to be one of the most corrupt countries in the Baltic states, but I most certainly do not agree to your freedom vs economic benefit stand! The loss of our economic power is a small price to pay for political and personal freedom, we are lucky we gained this freedom in the year 1991 without many people having to die for it! And there are all kinds of freedom, the most important being political freedom ad personal freedom! You are right that we don't have much political freedom, mostly due to the fact that the average Latvian is an idiot who blames USA for his problems, gets every political decision served to him on a silver platter, and cares only for himself not his country. But those things are the left-overs of the USSR mentality, and I hope that they will change in the next twenty years! Remember, that Rome wasn't built in a day! Compared to the soviet times, at least now we have a CHANCE to choose! Speaking about modern Russia - I agree that the democratic values there are as good as dead, but we can't blame Gorbatschow for that. He was just a man with a good vision, but unfortunately he was the only one! I do not think anything could change the way Russia has been and is being run. And so a man who stands out in such a crowd and is not scared to do what he feels is right, deserves our respect! Peace! Actually, I feel this is an interesting topic to discuss in more depth, and I would like to hear some of the Russians speak there mind about everything that has been said here.

I'm not saying that Microsoft or Mr. Gates are evil, but they get way too much credit when the real heroes are virtually unknown.
Exactly my personal humble opinion.

Mind you, without the GUI where would we all be?
In fact, the GUI wasn't Microsofts Invention, it was invented at PARC and the first time used in the Xerox Alto Computer, and than one year later in Apple's Macintosh.
Waht MS did: They signed the right contracts at the right time for a Platform, they didn't invent. Not more.
I don't have a homepage, for god's sake!

Well, you can brag about this all you want, but you said it yourselves - Bill was at the right place, at the right time and he knew exactly what to do! It's business! If what he done was so easy, than why didn't anyone else did it?? Well, I most certainly applaud to Mr. Gates as a businessman! ^^

I hear that more often, but Bill Gates made a pretty conscious choice for a certain platform and eventhough he basically went with the idea of someone else instead of his own, it turned out to have been the right choice. Microsoft only became as big as they are now because of how the company was run over the years, can't say that is all based on pure luck. I agree though as far as most technological inventions, the actual inventor usually won't get much credit when it's a big company that makes your invention available to all. I do wonder if it's true that Bill Gates and Microsoft have delayed progress, but I guess it's very much likely when a lot depends on their platform, Quote:

Yeah, I can understand that. I didn't mean to suggest that Gorbatschow was responsible for all the damage later done to Russia's democratic values by people like Putin by the way. Not quite his fault, eventhough probably the democratic system was too much of a transformation for them to handle anyways, don't forget Gorbatschow was friends with the KGB making his change even possible. Unfortunately that same KGB is now running the country with ex-KGB boss Putin as president ,
Cheers
