Hi there....

I am a guy interested in starting a new hobby in making computer games. I have been looking at 3D engines about the place and was recommended to check this one out..

I am hoping to make a Final Fantasy Style Game... so like a 2.5D Game.. Pre Rendered FMV sequences seamlessly mixed with real-time player controlled characters. Or if it looks good enough.. full real-time like the more modern FF games.

Anyway... myself and my mate are both 3D animators for over 10 years and will haev no probs makign GFX content. We are however NOT programmers at all.

So the questing is how much programming do i need? To make things like shops, inventory's, a combat system and stuff like that?

If you know of any engines that could better suit me please me me know.

Thanks

Hi there,

hm, actually most people try to tell people like you that the graphics part is really exhausting after a while if you are too ambitious but if you really have enough experience in this field I doubt you will have much obstacles.

Programming is the backbone of each software, as you might imagine. Even though gamestudio is one of the most easiest and powerful indie engines - you still have to program everything on your own. Though, there are lots of ressources which help getting you started. The t7 game engine will support a lot of standard patterns used in game development and there are also some users which contributed stuff like this (movement, inventories, etc.).

In my oppinion, though, you should not waste too much time in finding "templates" or poorly done code by people you don't know. I know that you want to make a hobby with this, but you should search for a person who is able to handle Gamestudio very well. It is significant that you two are experts in graphics and animation (like you said), because most project are getting never finished, over schedule or budget because such people are rare.

All the stuff you mentioned is definitely possible.

If you have further questions don't hesitate to ask in this thread, these forums, people by sending PMs/emails or me. Another benefit of this toolkit is the very vivid community with very ambitous people ranging from very green beginners which try to figure out whats going on and professionals which released several games with Gamestudio and make an income with it. I hope I helped you somehow :-)

Cheers,
Christian

We can do the GFX no problem. I myself have worked on a few commercial AAA games in my time before i moved into the film industry... so we are not worried. We have also designed teh game for sectional "tv episode" style release so we only have small blocks of the game to work on at a time... so we are confident that the GFX will not be a problem.

What we are asking is how HARD would it be for ZERO programming people (well i know a little Mel and maxscript) to get things moving in gamestudio? Is there pre built code for such things .. kinda plug and play i guess? stuff like that.

There is also a sort of 'plug'n'play' stuff like the templates, but if you are as good as you mention, you might find a good programmer in Jobs Offered when you post some screens of your work.

I have just found that it is hard to find programmers for a hobby project... no money and no intention of selling the product.. just a fun project to practice. It is our intention to muddle though and make a game demo as well as a FMV sequence "trailer".. then attack the help boards to find a dedicated programmer.

There are free demos, often even with source code, here: Acknex Unlimited Resource Site

But, maybe, someone already programed something that fits with your game idea.
Honestly, try it this way: post some ingame shots of your work - and there might be someone who is proud to help out with free code, because his work will shine bright with good grafix...
