PAST Demo Reel

It's been a while since I've updated the community on my goings on so here we go:

This is a demo reel (19 mins long; WMV format) that I have prepared for my current National Science Foundation grant. It will be viewed by among others: Ben Sawyer, co-founder of the Serious Games Movement; Henry Kelly, president of the American Federation of Scientists; and Dr. Richard Bartle, co-creator of the first MUD.

This demo is of the work that I did in the first two years of this project (2002-2004) and does not represent that work I have done in the last two years (2005-2006). It aims to show the major elements of the game and how I propose to use the Massively Multiplayer Online Game space for education.

You can download or see the full WMV here or you can go to my MySpace account and see a smaller version immediately here.

This is the first and only video I have ever made so it is rough around the edges. As such, I welcome you critique on it and how I can make it better. More importantly however, I welcome your opinion on how well the game concept got through and any other comments you might have about the game.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to view my work!

Nice to see you project on screen
(you have a complicated name )

I have some ideas on gamemodes:

As from the video I only saw experiments with thrown bodies
so this is about them:

Competion:

each player gets 4 Objects, with different masses and friction.

The objective is to tune the parameters of the throw of these 4 objects to hit a specific area.
(like a circle). The Student with the hits closest to the center gets the most points.

Another version:
you have a pool of "force", and 4 Objects.
The goal is to catapult these 4 Objects at least over a certain line,
The student who catapults all objects over the threshold, and also gets the farthest throw wins.

the competion could have 3 trials for each student, and you could watch other students
throwing next to your area.

--------------------------

Calculation:

the students get the formulas from the teacher (maybe also some whrong formulas next to right ones)
the task is to estimate the distance the objects will fly (different masses, friction, gravity)

A group of 4 students per team needs to calculate on paper how far, given the parameters, the objects will
fly. -> learning how to apply the right formulas.
this would be more applicable for a graded test, as the students cant complain about
not beeing able to handle the program.

These are exactly the kind of tasks/quests we will have our students do! Nice to see that the concept gets through!

Other similar tasks will be a basketball "around the world" type game and hitting a moving target type game.

I do like the prediction aspect you suggest. We could have the students enter their predictions prior to the task and submit to the server and then upon completing the experiment, either the server automatically calculates based of the prediction or the player submits the best result from their data.

(PS: The name is kinda of joke. In most comedies, when you see a hispanic, they make it a point to list out this very long name in distinct spanish when they introduce themselves. I will often write out my full name (Ricardo Javier Rademacher Mena) but rarely speak it. I thought it would be funny (to me at least) to say it in spanish and in it's full glory (well, semi full glory... my actual name runs for about 8 or 9 more surnames). Do you find it too distracting though or grossly unprofessional?)

this looks very intreasting, but even this is not graphically oriented, for "supplying" better orientation you should add detail maps, so you can actually see how near you are to the ground. I had a lot of problems distinguishing how near a character is to the ground, or the camera

nice work!
Keep it up!

That's good advice Michael. I hadn't thought of it since, well, I "know" where everything is, right? I think even just better shadows would help as I look at it now.

I'll have to keep this in mind and put more/better visual cues for the next reel... thanks!

It has been quite a while since you have posted anything about this project, so it is good to see what you are doing. You convey a lot of enthusiasm and energy for your subject.

You were probably nervous, but you spoke too quickly and in some places you went into more technical detail than was neccessary. You seem to be enjoying yourself as you go through the different experiments, but shorter and more spectacular examples would be appreciated by the non-physisists in your audience. Try using some time compression (edit out the repetitive or tedious bits so it moves faster). A few juicy sound effects wouldn't go amiss either. You own enthusiasm is infectuous, but I think you could make the presentation more exciting and fun for your audience as well.

Anyway, it looks good. You had me wanting to play it.

The main reason for the time delay is that for the past 2 years I've pretty much been working on the technical underside of the game as well as the business aspects of my company... not the kind of stuff that makes for fun updates. As a real update, I should have the new version all pretty and such in another six months, with Dan Silverman creating the levels and The Fat Man creating music and sound.

As to the pace, I agree that it's fast. However note that the presentation is already 19 minutes long. If I had taken a more "relaxed" approach, it could have dragged on to 30 minutes or more... yikes!

The technical aspects are necessary due to the audience. This is not a public demo. I present it to you for you will appreciate the 3DGS elements and fewer yet might appreciate my project, but it is not aimed at the non-physicist. This demo reel was created for the grant committee comprised of PhDs and other big wigs and as such, I had to get technical to showcase the educational aspect of the game.

Sound effects are sorely needed you are right. They will be present in the next reel.

And you are correct about it being more tidy if you were the audience. In the future (and if I have time... this one took me approx. two weeks to create, but it was my first one...) I will create two reels: one for the grant committee and internal use; another for the public with, as you suggest, more direct and flashy demos of what we are doing. Heck, really Russ, in the future my public demo will be the game client, eh???

Thanks for your kind words. I can think of no better compliment than "you had me wanting to play it" and I appreciate that.

i'm like hell as always :
but i've seen your video : you were too serious for a project with really no real entertainment and goal : it's only intellectual talk and theory.
perhaps some pepople will like that ?

Well, it's meant to be all intellectual and theory so thanks!

Know your audience: this demo was created to present the physics concept to another physicist (Dr. Henry Kelly) and technical aspects to the guy that basically created the genre of Massive Online Worlds (Dr. Richard Bartle).

Also remember that, as I constantly reiterate in the Demo Reel, this is not an example of the game persay but rather a "feasibility study" as in can this educational concept be done and can it be done with 3DGS.

Rest assured, the entertainment aspect is going to be given as much thought as the technical aspect. I mention this in the "World Tour" section where I talk about student-players traveling through space and time and interacting with different personalities and performing different quests in line with what you would do in EQII, WoW, LineageII, ToonTown, etc.
