Hey there.

I think this question was asked a thousand times. but I can't find any good answer for my question with the search function of the forum. That's the reason why I made a new post now.

################# My Questions ################
What do you basicly need to actually code a MMO Game?

> What programs are required?
> Or is it all possible with 3DGS?
> Do I need to learn any other script language then Lite-c?
> Or is it possible to code all by Lite-c?
> Do I need special plug-ins, or do I have to be familiar with SDK scripting or dll's?

I Could use a small Tutorial that shows up WHAT you actually need to establish an MMO Game.
Let's take an example to point out what I'm wanting to know shall we?

> Just think that I want to create a game like
Ragnarok Online.

First I need a Server that the game is running on and deals with the connecting clients.
Then I need a client which is able to connect to the server that everyone who wants to get on to the game needs to install on his own pc.

Question:How do I make such a Server program and a Client program that would do this?

Secondly I need an Account and Log-In System/Server that keeps the accounts and recognizes the existing accounts. If the right account is typed in, It allowes the client program to connect to the server.

Question:How is this possible? Do I have to use mysql or ms access? Is Lite-c able to grab information out of ms access or mysql or do I need something else?

Finally we got logged in.
Now we Need an ID System/Server that keeps our Charakers and all it's parameters.

Question: Is this client side or server side. how do I manage something like this?

we create a character or we select an existing one.
After this we log into the world and we'll appear there where we logged off the night before.

Question: Charakter creation? re-appear on the last point?

Now the rest is game dynamics. a Lite-c game that runs on the A7 engine. The Parameters of the clients will be saved when you log off and from time to time.

Question: Saving the World and Client/Charakter Data?

And now the ultimate Question.
Is this possible with 3DGS anyways?
If yes > HOW?

Or is it that hard to make that I better give up the idea of my very own little online game and stick back to rpg maker?

I hope you can tell me If my Idea is just rediculous or if it is possible.

3+ years if you know what you are doing.
5+ years if you don't.

Oh, and don't even BOTHER with MMO's here. It's not worth it. Go to Multiverse or Second Life if you have MMOG dreams, not here, not with GS, not in the land of broken MMO dreams. frown

What you would need to make a [succesful] MMO: Patience, A 4 year college degree in Game Developement [programming, modeling, art] with a minor in Business Management, game industry experience -preferably in MMO, an arsenal of books [programming -winsock, c++, security+, SQL, etc, art, modeling, etc etc -all current editions], programs: 3ds Max subscription or at least version 7 for biped, Adobe Phototoshop, Adobe Audition, Visual Studio or make your own editor, experience with at least 5 game engines or ones you have built, some intense vector and shader math classes that make you want to rip our your hair and/or cry if you have no hair left, several computers and knowledge of at least 4 operating systems -only 1 of which can be linux [ubuntu], a deep understanding of version control/subversion, internet protocol and port control/allocation, contract writing and confidentiality agreements, great instructors when you were in school, and a good lawyer.

I could go on.
