Aftter having worked with two 17" screens I think next I'd try one big monitor.
I see the advantage that it's one real screen which can be used individually (meaning for gaming you can use the full area and not just a single screen).

The gap in the middle when using two monitors is not that much of a problem. You get used to that really fast.

The problem with one monitor might be the alignment of Windows. A tool which splits a 30" screen into 2 maybe 4 desktops would be really great. The tile window function has the problem that it tiles ALL windows. That's not always what you really want.

all windows that are currently minimized don't get tiled. so it's possible to choose the ones you want. i think there are more convenient window management tools though if you google a bit.

Yes ok, still this is quite cumbersome imho. At least reduced workflow compared to a dual monitor system. It would be great if there were free tools to overcome this - then my decission would be clear.

@mercuryus: I think a 24" is too expensive. It would be better to buy a 22" Widescreen and after some time you can switch your second 17" CRT with a second 22" Widescreen.

The price isn't the point.

at www.snogard.de 24"-26" are available from ~€350.- to ...

For this I also can have 2x22" monitors
But for 2 monitors I will need a new video adapter also

I think working with 2 monitors is the better choice but playing (or video) is more fun with a big screen.
A big screen would cover my view through the window (what is very relaxing for the eyes from time to time!

If the price isn't the point you ca also buy a new graphics card.

22" Widescreen is enough to play.
Take care: You need a higher resolution the bigger the screen is. Otherwise you have to use a smaller resolution but you will see more the stretched pixel.

I got to use a friends computer with 2 24" flatscreens. I was in heaven!

So my advice is to put your money into one big 24" and maybe later you can get 2, however if you buy 17" monitors you cant change your mind later. I hope that makes sense.
