The range setting didn't change anything. I just built the room by adding a hollowed cube via the menu in WED and then clicked add light and kept it at default and also played with the range setting. No matter how I build it, the 3d view stays plain and evenly lit and it looks the same in the previews still Could it just be that the trial has some issue that won't let me build with light maps?

I think there is a return policy if something does not work, but there is probably no return policy when you cant do something for reasons of your own.
The trial version definitely has lightmapping. You dont need to buy something. You're obviously doing something wrong, probably something very simple, but I cant figure it. It should be easy, just place a light and adjust its color and range, I had never any problem to do lightmapping even in the most complex levels. Maybe your ambient settings are way too bright so you don't see any lights? The best is you follow the game design tutorial, it starts with doing a very simple level.

I will try going through the tutorial from the very start. I have been making BSP based levels since quake 1 and never had any trouble using QuakeEd or Hammer for Halflife etc. Maybe the fact that I am used to another work flow is against me than. I just placed a hollow room and a default light then hit build. Not sure what else needed to be done for something that simple. I started with just default settings. As I said, maybe since I am already altered by some other workflows I am over confident and just need to go through the most basic tutorials And you are probably right, I bet it's something very simple. Will report the results. -Tim

Ok before the tutorials, I changed the sun(ambient) in map properties to rbg 10 10 10 and now I can see the light I guess by default the ambient is just too high. Usually you would get fullbright or total darkness in most engines so it confused me. Thanks -Tim
