Hello,
I am trying to compile a simple hollow room with 1 light in WED. I tried all sorts of settings in the build menu but I just can't get any shadows or light to show. I can only adjust the ambient levels.

I searched the forums a bit and saw "lightmap v2" mentioned but I don't see that feature in the trial I am using, it seems to be the latest engine, I just downloaded it last night.

Thanks for any help on this, I am really liking the engine so far.

-Tim

Examine your light properties.
Increase the range as the current range may not reach the walls.
Make it big and to test it drop the height of your light. Build a simple map to save time.
Good luck.

I think I encountered the same problem as you.
What I did was import a model instead of loading an entity.
Is it just me, or that is how it is supposed to be?
(It takes longer to import an MDL model than to just load it in...)
Sorry if I have a different problem (don't want to hijack a thread)...

The range setting didn't change anything.
I just built the room by adding a hollowed cube via the menu in WED and then clicked add light and kept it at default and also played with the range setting.

No matter how I build it, the 3d view stays plain and evenly lit and it looks the same in the previews still frown

Could it just be that the trial has some issue that won't let me build with light maps?

I think that you need to buy the extra program for $99.
If you go to the "features" on our site, it says that you need
the extra edition to use shadowmaps (I think Conitech is trying
to say you need the $99 edition for lightmapping.

An alternative is to just use dynamic lights.....
I don't even bother with lightmapping even though I really want
to use it (takes too long to get my models in).

Try hitting the "dynamic" light property on your light.....
(or set a light flag to dynamic, since you have the free edition)

Ah, that may be it. I'm not using the lite version though. I just got the trial that has the time limit.

Also, Am I supposed to see dynamic lights in the editor? I can see the little icon thing but no lighting or shadows.

I really wish there was a way to trial a full featured version if that is the case. I am planning on getting the $200 version of A7 if everything works properly but i'm not able to tell yet. I wonder if there is a 30 day return policy or something if I buy the full thing and can't get things to work?

I'm just trying to evaluate everything I can before I make any purchase decisions.

Thanks!

I think there is a return policy if something does not work, but there is probably no return policy when you cant do something for reasons of your own.

The trial version definitely has lightmapping. You dont need to buy something. You're obviously doing something wrong, probably something very simple, but I cant figure it. It should be easy, just place a light and adjust its color and range, I had never any problem to do lightmapping even in the most complex levels. Maybe your ambient settings are way too bright so you don't see any lights? The best is you follow the game design tutorial, it starts with doing a very simple level.

I will try going through the tutorial from the very start. I have been making BSP based levels since quake 1 and never had any trouble using QuakeEd or Hammer for Halflife etc. Maybe the fact that I am used to another work flow is against me than.

I just placed a hollow room and a default light then hit build. Not sure what else needed to be done for something that simple. I started with just default settings.

As I said, maybe since I am already altered by some other workflows I am over confident and just need to go through the most basic tutorials smile

And you are probably right, I bet it's something very simple.
Will report the results.

Ok before the tutorials, I changed the sun(ambient) in map properties to rbg 10 10 10 and now I can see the light smile I guess by default the ambient is just too high. Usually you would get fullbright or total darkness in most engines so it confused me.

Thanks
