I am (very) new to gamestudio and game creation in general.

Here's the deal. I teach highschool physics and would like to create a MP RPG as a learning-tool/incentive for my students.

Are there A7 modules out there I can edit and piece together to get started?

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

there are a few multiplayer examples, including some RPG templates. I _think_ if you are really keen and only need your students to mess around and extend it a bit for fun and learning, that these could be useful to you. Check the Contributions forum, and remove the 3 month default limit.

Don
have a great day

You cant CREATE a working MMORPG, at least not
from that starting point.

But what you can do is to DESIGN a concept for it,
wich is useful for teaching a class.

You can cover these areas in you class:

-Creating Contents (Editing Models in MED, to show
how People, plants, weapons etc in a game are made)

-Creating a gameworld (as Example, to put together the
terrains and models in WED to show how gameworld are
in concept are crafted)

-How to write a story, quests

-Using Excel to make a concept table for
different classes in the MMORPG (like a mage), and to
write down data for their abilities, spells, and level-caps
in number form

-let the students draft the concept of a bigger
client-server architecture,
how datapackets could be created / what they should contain,
what influence latency and bandwith have etc.

I think thats the most useful approch
to get something done, and lets the students learn a
lot about game-making.
---

Dont try to actually program a MMORPG, you will not
get it to work and just be frustrated.

I don't think he wants the students to work on the game guys. I think he's asking what he can do to make a decent game himself for the students to PLAY, as a learning tool. Something to get them interested in the subject matter. Am I right?

Well, I definitely don't think you should be attempting to make an MMO, especially being new to GS and game design in general. A lot of extremely experienced folks have failed at making an MMO. It's extremely difficult. I don't think an MMO would be suitable for your needs anyway. However, a MPRPG is certainly possible, and can be done with a little skill and experience.

I'm definitely no pro, but I've learned a LOT about Lite-C and game design. I'll help you out however I can if you want. Feel free to pm me anytime. If I don't know the answer, we can find someone who does. I do suggest that you get the Lite-C workshops and start there first. Then you should have a look through the manual, and some of the example programs to get yourself up to an adequate level in Lite-C.

Well, it's not a good start to make an MMORPG. Try with something smaller, then bigger, and bigger.

I guess your students use Lite-C free?

Have a look into my ANet plugin. It offers a free version that could also be used. ANet has a few HowTos, examples and a tutorial. The free ANet version can also be used with Lite-C free.

Maybe ANet is easier to understand, but have a look and decide yourself.

ANet - A stable and secure network plugin with multi-zone, unlimited players, voip, server-list features,... (for A7/A8)!

You hit the nail on the head -- a quest-based sci-fi adventure with upgrades tied to class performance to motivate students to assimilate the content.

A small MPRPG would be ideal -- I really have no illusions of doing anything on the scale of WoW, just something that looks cool and is fun and can accommodate a class of twenty or so (let me know if that is still too ambitious)

I wanted to start with a character-generation screen (or a ship-building screen); any help in this regard (or even better ideas) will be immensely appreciated.

Thanks Jaeger!

yeah i think a limit of 20 players should be possible, if you have some know-how, and I would definately reccomend anet for your multiplayer.

What's your past experience in programming, and how much time do you have to develop this? - that would be the key factors for me.

Can't think of the right examples offhand, someone else might do better.

Don
have a great day
