Is it possible to import a sprite directly into a MED .mdl file and give it properties like overlay, transparent etc.?

I've seen something like it with some trees a while ago. Is this a workaround or is it really a sprite?

It's been a while since I did this. But as I remember, you make make a model using the sprite for a skin. Then, in the model's action, add

my.overlay = on;

Not tested
