for the changes, what you have posted includes 1.4 and older versions changes, that's why it's lon as a book
Yes, I was aware of that. Still, did you look how many of these pages are filled with comments towards 1.5.1 changes? There are a lot. It is still very impressive.
...but some people like me want lot more tools to speed up game making.
Yes, though the editor is very nice there are tools missing. I see Irrlicht as a great alternative for programmers especially if they are new to the scene. Look at the code-examples. You can make a game with just a few lines of code. There are many powerful functions included and still there are basic commands like painting a 2d-line. You can render almost everything with Irrlicht, I tried it while I was writing a book. Irrlicht was the best alternative to visualize my examples (easy to understand and only little source code needed, free and easy to setup).
And it is very good suited for small cross-platform games.
I still wait for the day someone creates a gamedev suite with it adding some editors plus a scripting language like Lua. There once was this "Rabcat Engine"...
Yes, I remember this well. I was excited about this approach. But I guess Rabcat did not have time to finish it because they are busy with custom jobs to convert artwork from PC to console games.
Still this would be a cool project.
