Well just to start a new discussion :

Don't you thinks cartoon choice , non realistic , allow you lot more freedom on design of levels, models and also textures ?

Some examples :
Ratchet And CLanck on PS3 : have cartoon style, but it uses some models with good number of polygons, some good shaders, lot of effects !

I think carton style allow you to make new ennemies, why following: Big dragons, zombies each time laugh ?
Yeah i know zombies are cool caus you don't have to program a difficult AI laugh !

Even some games take some realistic design mixed with cartoon textures, effects , and keep some good bunch of details , even with cartoon textures:
-latest Prince of Persia
-the excellent Borderlands !

That's why i prefer cartton style ; i don't have to stick to real proportions, i have lot more freedom.
I can imagine and modelise anything, no limit : caus i don't have to respect a perfect real visual design and proportions ,textures etc ...

Depends upon the situation.

For example, having a cartoon style in a game like Modern Warfare would completely kill the setting. Cartoon style does allow a lot of freedom, yes, but it can restrict you to certain settings. The realistic style allows you to have other settings, like war-beaten battlefields or horror-themed dungeons. However it too can restrict you to certain settings that the cartoon style could handle easily.

In any case, no one style is better than another. If you're creating a game with a specific theme, it will only work with a few select styles.

My Famous Quotes: "Hip hop is like a virus, infecting everyone and everything around it. Every form of media has some way, shape or form, assimilated hip hop into it." It has also mutated into other strains like, trip hop, house, rap, gangster, and conscious forms. Once you are infected with it, its with you for life."

I personally think that you can mix realistic and cartoon. But you have to be very carefully to give the game a main cartoon character.
"Borderlands" was a commerical disaster because the developers where not able to make this special feeling.

I think its easier to get a harmonic graphic-style with the cartoon stuff, but creating a really good surrealistic style, like 'Okami' & 'Borderlands' has, is much harder than creating a nice (pseudo)realistic look.

The problem I see is: Cartoon games often flop. I remember very good games like Beyond Good and Evil (a superior mix of adventure, rps, sneaking, racing and fighting) but it was not the success I expected it to be. The reason might be the cartoon setting.

The same happened with the German RPG Venetica. It is a cartoon game and I remember lots of forum postings where gamers complained about this.

But kids love cartoon. So it just depends on your target audience.

In fact Beyond Good And Evil , i finished was incredible :
A great mix, with very good length :
-The problem was most the advertisement that wasn't present at all, a simple video showing all gameplay phases and story could have make it sell a lot.
Some good bunch of people know how good it is, and hope a great sequel !

Borderlands, have been sold a lot , 2 millions already :
It's a big success ! and the company already think at making a sequel !
Why saying it's a flop ?
I play it , and it's like Diablo game with loots , but in an FPS universe !
The univers is great, graphics also, gameplay excellent :
thousands of weapons to find ! When you begin you can't stop !
So why saying it's a bad game ? (reviews are not bad at all) !

Venetica, had poor graphics, Black and White, i found it too much low in colors, it could have 8 colors or a grey colors instead ?

------------------------------------------

Well the subject is not what game is good and what game is bad !

A game cartoon that really works :

-PS3 :
Ratchet and Clanck on
Big scens with thousands of polygons, incredibly good gameplay , beautifull cartoon art using shaders !

-PS2 :
Okami : incredibly good and deep
Odin Sphere

- Gamecube :
Wind walker
Killer Seven

-WII :
Maramusa the demon blade ( a marvellous game)
No More heroes

On Iphone :
- Zombie Ville
- OMG Pirates

In fact cartton games can succed, depends on what you do in them, if there is not repetitive too much, good gameplay, great use of Cartoon design you can do big things !

If you do cartoon ,you must bring your own effects, design etc .... not doing bad basic cartoon 3D art !

And don't forget, the commercial advertisment is what makes a game work or not lot of times !
And unfortunatly what makes some pretty bad Next Gen games to sell a lot !

Hm... neither of these games was really successful afaik...
Ubisoft will return to realistic graphics with the next Prince Of Persia; Seems like they werent really convinced by the sellings.
I however prefer realistic graphics over cartoon style in action games.

well i believer your wrong about borderlands, and as far as P.O.P. it may not have sold well, but i'm not sure thats because of the graphic design, since anyone i've ever heard of playing it, said they thought it look great.

Well, puzzle game example: Zelda is great, Myst is beautiful. If used well, both styles are equally entertaining.
