What the hell is a "Jungle Game"?

A7 (not A8, no idea what that one can do) is advertised to be able to create "Jungle Games", in it's dreamy, ellipsis-filled style ("Create adventure games... racing games... Jungle games..."). But what am I doing in a "Jungle Game"? Like, what is the goal of a Jungle Game. It can't be shooting, else it would be a shooter, it can't be puzzle-solving or exploring ruins, else it would be an Adventure, or maybe an educational game. It can't be a character-drama or anything.

So that leaves us with a game that features... a jungle. To explore, presumably (even though even that might make it more of an adventure and less of a pure "Jungle Game"). Sure, that's exciting, right? "Explore a jungle! And then, explore the jungle some more!"

I don't know, I don't get it. I do get the rest though, especially the slightly more awesome (awful?) ideas the german website gives me, which is every single simulator-game on earth. We have train-, diving-, driving-, driving-school-, robot- (HELL YEAH), excavator-, farm- and... synthesizer-simulators?

Synthesizer-simulators, ladies and gentlemen.

So which of those screens got you to buy it? Me, mostly an incredibly old screenshot of glider, that turned out to look somewhat different to those old shots. And incredibly enough, those shots are still there: there 'ya go!

Wow. I love that website laugh - aaww, memories!

(In other news, the logo at the top now features two worms wrestling, apparently to the death given that both they and the playing-area is covered in thick worm-blood.

Oh, hang on, that's an eight!?)

Perhaps this post will get me points for originality at least.

I just love the following sentence:

"Gamestudio/A8 is 100% script compatible to Gamestudio/A7, except for projects using the physics engine."

Now thats 100%!

I guess a "jungle game" is a game like crysis. In other words, the A8 engine is supposed to support dense vegetation. But that's just a wild guess.

Maybe infinite_terrain.c from the samples folder is the jungle game. A7/8 is also really good for clock games, hello world games, and knights on wheels games, from what I've heard.

WhenI bought, there were no screenshots, and I had no internet. I bought it after reading a small advertisement in a computer magazine.

Are you insane? You should definately use Unity for a hello-world game!

But why did you buy something like this in the first place? Couldn't you just carve the game on a piece of wood or something, I mean, who would even play it when there is no electricity? Also, most people probably didn't have the time to play in between hunting wild animals for food or trying to get the fire started, right?
Right?
wink
Everytime you link to your really old A3-screenshots, I look at them in amazement - it seems complete and thought-out (though I do realize that we're all making screenshots so it seems that way, and in most cases, it's definately not though-out and complete). Have you ever written some kind of post-mortem for these really old projects?

complete? WUHAHAHAHAHAHA...

The post mortem you can read in *any* AUM interview (ye, I mean this "start small..." stuff).
I was young and inexperienced and thought I could come up with something like Hexen easily.

Well although I terribly failed, I'm wondering how much energy I put into this project when thinking about the fact that I scripted using a language which has no arrays ... and I removed any wrong pixel from EVERY frame of animated sprites... partly even did palette replacement for each animation frame ... and I've built around 10 levels with this extermely crappy nearly unusable A3 WED.... can't believe this nowadays...

compared to the build editor the A3 WED was poor crap. I have had some remarkable results with it though and it was the reason to really start programming instead of making QBasic text adventure stuff.
