How long does it take to finish your game (your story mode)? Planned and actual completion time. Currently, my game is only about 8 minutes short but my aim is 2,5-3hours of gameplay. As I enjoy the 2 hours (good length) it takes me to finish a GBA Metroid title ten times more than the 5 hour (way too short) campaign of COD:MW2, I (think to) know it's more a matter of the experience or its intensity than the single amount of time. Nevertheless, I would like to know what play time you achieve as an indie developer and what duration is too short?

My final gameplay time will be around 3-5 hours if you want to achieve erverything, just because you have to learn the controls and there are many many levels who aren't that easy. I think that is a godd time to get to know to a game and to like or dislike it, so I am happy about it. Multiplayer time is not included

The length of games will vary a lot in the future. Currently the hardcore gamers expect exactly the same game experience and length they are used to. But with all these games on phones, with the success of casual games, puzzle games, match-3-games and more, there will be room for short (but cheap) games. I bought games like "Zuma's Revenge" from PopCap for my phone for 1.99. And I played it for days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_EwYhsAoM0While I also bought multi-million productions for the PC for more money with a shorter playing time, but more immense and very entertaining (Mafia2 as an example). Both have a place in this world.

It depends on if the game is story/exploration based or repetative.
Some Games (as Zuma, Tetris, Moorhuhn, Chess but also Arena-shooters or Multiplayer RTS) are of the "repetative" type. They work great this way, and the time people spend on it depends on how long they are fun.
Exploration based Games (Adventures, RPGs, Story-Shooters) have a predetermined lenght. In this case they should not end too soon, as this leaves the player dissatified. But if they artificially drag the content too long, they are boring, and many players will not finish them.
So basically, they should be as long as possible, given that they also keep interesting (enough new challanges and variations). But I think at 10 to 30 hours they will reach a natural limit.
