Yang Tai Chi Chuan education software

Hello Gamestudio community,

after working some years with gamestudio i finally managed to finish some work, worth to be presented.
Its a learning application for a Tai Chi academy from my region which we had to build for our studies of Virtual Design at the Fachhochschule Kaiserslautern. While most other groups decided to use Videos to complete the task, our group tried the realtime-engine way.

The Tai Chi teacher was captured with optical motioncapturing to get the best results.
After that we used ZBrush and Maya for sculpting the character and Motionbuilder for cleaning the bonesanimation. The Cloth simulation was also done in Maya.
Then we transferred the 15 minutes long animation to vertex animations in 21 seperate MDL files for Gamestudio. We had to do that becouse the very high poly character consumed too much memory to take the whole vertexanimation at once.
But the buffering doesnt take very long and works pretty well(clearing the ram with level_free() brought up some problems with shaders but ent_fixnormals() fixed that:) ).
The temple and environment were built in 3ds Max and most shaders (außer dem godrayshader, dafür dickes danke an Hummel laugh ) were written by my own.
There is still some work left to do like adjusting the sunlight and adding some lights behind the character. The small lampions on each side are also meant to be glowing but becouse of time pressure we decided to do that later.

Greetings from my group and me

Characterdesign and Cloth - Sebastian Lauer
Interfacedesign and Assets - Dominik Müller
Environment - Arne Menzel
Animation cleaning - Tobias Herschel
Engine stuff and shaders - Oliver Queck

special thanks to Slin from slindev.com and the whole Gamestudio Shader Community!:)

some pictures of the "puremode" (no environment, just teacher in white space) will follow.

Edit: forgot to mention the stereoscopic mode. If you've got red-cyan glasses at home you can see some pictures in 3d laugh

This looks very good. A few points though:

- it is too dark and thus misses some contrast
- the camera movement makes it hard to watch
- camera movement does not look smooth, as if you had very low fps

I have a question:
Why did you use this memory-expensive vertex animation? Wouldn't bones animation be a better option?

By the way: The list of your tools sounds very expensive and Autodesk-exclusive. Your school must have spent a big pile of money or you got some free educational versions to catch you into the boat of Autodesk. But these tools would sum up to more then 20k in Europe for sure. I personally rather like the idea to teach affordable tools just to give each student the chance to use it professionally after finishing university.

Anyway: good job!

Hm, as far as I know (or heard at least), Autodesk offer their tools to students for free.

However, on topic, looks extremely good; Nothing to add to the points listed before, very good work.

Great Work! Did u use motion-capture for the modelanimation?

A8c, Blender, FlStudio, Unity3d

yes we thought about bones but really wanted to get a nice looking cloth animation and realtime cloth didnt look so solid.
The application runs with about 90 fps on maximum details, but the buffering of the animation makes it laagy every once in a while. I also added two more graphic settings to choose from with older shader models and less detail.

Autodesk products are effordable for students but i guess blender could've brought similar results. Sadly autodesk doesn't have that much competition these days.

Edit: Yes we used motioncapture data which we recorded at our school. luckily we've got a new optical motioncaputre system there.
In the final version we only took every 5. frame and used interpolation for a smooth animation.

greetings and thx for reply

You missed my point. Of course they do everything to catch students. I mean, after finishing the university you have to buy a commercial license for all these tools and this would sum up to 20k for all those tools.

Actually there is a lot of competition out there. There are tools that do sculpting much better (ZBrush, 3d-coat), tools that do modelling better (modo, Silo) and tools that do unwrapping better (modo), tools that do re-topology better (3d-Coat, modo). I think Autodesk has only an advantage in terms of animation (many professionals like to do their animation jobs in Maya or Motionbuilder, but I also know a lot that switch to Blender, animate there and export via MDD back to their render tool). Another advantage is that these Autodesk tools are simply old and thus have lots of plugins for special jobs or exporting.
