Is there any problem if I make a level that is very similar to a level of another game?

It seems to me, if you use a different style with your own textures and models, that should not be a problem with copyright, because you did it yourself, right?

That was my problem when I wanted to practice level design.
I am an avid Call of Duty player and I wanted to recreate the levels I enjoy the most.
As long as you don't use their textures, and their models, its completely fine because as rojart stated, "you did it yourself, right".

As far as I can see, you can make an exact replica, as long as you don't "borrow" their property.

That sounds right to me. I used to think otherwise until I found out that you can even play songs you didn't write as long as you didn't steal the sheet music.

That would be correct....

Anything you make yourself you can use. unless its Trade Marked. (TM).

People can only trademark / copyright a design.

If you redesign it and make it your own way and can prove youve made it all (yes this includes music and code not just textures / models) then theres not alot anyone can do about it.

take facebook as an example. they tried to sue the person that inveted it but didnt get very far because they couldnt prove he stole any code...thats because he created it all from scratch.

Why would you want to use somones levels as inspiration though, surly you would want a unqiue level to go with your unqiue game?

I'm no lawyer but have studied a bit of law.

A blueprint or architectural design would be copyrighted whether any patent has been filed or not.

Just a question, I just read the books by Jim Butcher the Alera Codex series and I am thinking about making a rpg not based on the book itself but just by the magic system that he uses in it with a few changes. Is this illegal?
I already contacted Jim Butcher's manager by email and never got a reply
