Hello everybody.

at first I have to remark that this thread is for the inhabitants of the european union in the first place. This is about an initiative that wants to establish a human right on water and is put against privatisation of water supply in the european union as it is currently planned.

I can only recommend participating by signing in initiative:

German only: Hier ist noch ein unterhaltsames Video zum Thema. Erwing Pelzig bringt seine Liebe zu Europa und zum ZDF zum Ausdruck:

It is wonderful that Uhrwerk mentions this initiative.

I can only emphasis the importance to participate.

Quote:
A European Citizens' Initiative is a new tool for participatory democracy in Europe that has been available since 1 April 2012. Citizens can put an issue on the European political agenda by means of an ECI, which involves collecting one million signatures from at least seven different EU Member States.

You can see that there are already one million signatures reached, BUT there are still way too less from other countries than Germany!
So, please, whereever you live in the European Union, spread the word and sign the initiative!

I hope this tool of democracy will be established in the minds of the European citizens and used often.

The idea is for this petition to stop it before it passes. That way individual countries could not make that decision.
I am not sure but if this petition stops this legislation and declares water a basic human right, then no country would be able to privatize water. And if one did it could be considered to be commiting "crimes against humanity" or something similar? So they could be forced to revoke their decision, be heavily penalized, or even attacked by the EU/UN or other organization?
I am not sure about this part because the video and the information on the web do not go into detail about the consequences if this is approved. But even in a worst case scenario, where this legislation could allow military action, I feel it would be justified as for me this really could be just as bad as slavery, dictatorship, tyranny, or even massacre.

Can I sign from Russia? Or are there only EU citizens are allowed to sign?

It's an EU petition so only inhabitants of the EU may sign it.

Carlos, this is an EU citizen initiative and hence can only influence EU right. If the petition succeeds (it already did with 1.000.000 signs) the EU has to rethink the decision to liberalize the water market. If the content of the petition became legal right the members of the EU had to put this in national right. If they don't legal action can be taken against that country. At the end of such an action there is monetary penalty for that country. As far as I know this is pretty frequent, e.g germany has about 80 of those actions against it because it's laws do not correspond to the EU laws.

Please note that the E.U is not a military alliance. That's the NATO for europe (even if the U.S. are in the NATO as well.) Hence it cannot and will not attack random countries to bring them democracy.

Or even pass it to friend that are not from EU... You never know where an email chain might end up!

I am much more comfortable knowing it only can cause economic penalizations if a EU country refuses to follow it. But I signed it anyway because even though the doubt made me uncomfortable, the concequences of not signing it would be much worse.
Thankyou for the clarification!
