...so pay their Kickstarter page a visit:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/strafegame/strafe

It looks really cool and I'd love to see this funded so if you're into this kind of game, it's certainly worth backing.

It is a nice joke - but even some A4 titles looked better. And why the hell need they $185,096 goal? Seems that this is a little bit too overheated.

I actually like the game's design. It's definitely supposed to look the way it does and most things seem to fit together nicely.

Yes that's also what I think.
And I really like the mechanics, it actually combines elements from 90's shooter games with elements from roguelikes and the like. Plus they have a really nice blood system.

Generated Doom style levels I like. The style the whole thing is presented in I don't like.

It is certainly overrated, I watched the trailer sometime ago and my initial reaction was very positive, but since then my impression of it has diminished because I've realized that it's basically just a bunch of pizzazz for something very basic and unremarkable. And a $185,096 goal, sheesh. For that kind of money I'd demand something way more interesting than a lame Quake knockoff with no multiplayer and no soul.

EDIT: Like seriously, I am hesitant to draw comparisons between this thing and my game but I think it's safe to say my team has accomplished at least as much as they have if not more with NO budget, and I can name other games who have them beat there too. So like, while the trailer is amusing and stuff, the bottom line is that this game is just not worth the price they are setting themselves at. /endrant

Yes, I think it is exactly the trailer which is boosting you back some decades ago.
I loved the situation, when the girls where in the living room and I played with my fellows quake and listen to marilyn manson antichrist superstar boosting out of the boxes. This was a very good feeling. We where flashed by the quality of blood and gore and never thought that we could play such uncensored games in germany.
This is the feeling, the trailer perfectly catches and transports in to your mind.
But the product is very normal.

By the way... after I watched some times the trailer... I must say, it is very perfect.
It remembers me a the colors, music , dramatic and style of some Steven Spielberg production like "back to the future". So this is truly a second point, why it catches me so deeply. Maybe they invest 170.000 bugs in the trailer and need some 15.000 more for pizza and cola. Okay, maybe I will give them 5 bugs.

alpha, the trailer did actually cost them 1.500 dollars, the project lead is a professional video producer. They have a behind the scenes post which nicely shows how the trailer came together:

Thanks, nice info! Specially the melting-effect reminds me at some old books from "making of indiana jones, part 1". They have done it the same way when they opened the "bundeslade". I have so much books from the 80. from Dick Smith, Tom Savini, Rob Bottin and Rick Baker. Old School Special FX. Everything made with color, latex and nose putty and things like these. Very cool time. Today, I use after effects and some plug ins from TubeTape etc.
