I was playing around with the lights on my level, and some results looked like this:

[img=http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/8760/uglyshadows5oy.th.png]

Looks like cat puked on the wall, IMO.The lights color values are 100/100/100, and the wall is a cream color. My 3d card is a GEFORCE 4000 MX, so I doubt its my hardware. So do I need to upgrade to get better looking shadows? If so, I guess I will get extra, fast.

Thanks
MacLaren

Firstly what was the lighting quality set on your build options. Second what is the resolution of the textures you were using. Thirdly try using more smaller lights rather than one big one to get smoother lighting. I dont know if the lightmaps in Extra look any better. If so it will say on the gamestudio feature page.

My light quality is set on, and the texture 128 * 128. I believe I am doing what you say with the lights. Ive been playing with them for a really long time, and the results always look like this. Its just that, the light is greenish. The colcor is set to gray (100/100/100) and the wall is cream. Then why does it come out green?

Oh well, Ill just keep going anyway.

Thanks
MacLaren

The eye receives a lot more green information than red and blue (this is also why the format is 565 and not 655 or 556 for 16bit images). Solution: Set red and green to zero and blue to 100. The result will be a clean grey shadow.

Hmm after a look in the gamestudio feature page it appears that extra can only do 16bit shadows. You'll have to upgrade to Com to get 24bit smooth shadowing.

One likely cause to it is because of how 16-bit color works. In short, 5 bits are used for red, or 32 possibilities. 6 are used for green as green appears very bright at the full 255 compared to the other two and gives 64 possibilities. The other 5 are for blue. Provided that the colors use an even-step technique, red and blue will step by 8's with 9's every 4th one. Green will step by 4's and skip every other 16th one. The color, for example, 128, 67, 191 would become 132, 69, 189. Try taking out your graphics program and have half the image as the first color and half of the second. If you use 32-bit color display setting for windows, you could, quite noticably, detect a difference between these two colors. Blue is the darkest appearing color, then red, magenta, green, cyan, and yellow at the brightest.

I guess you are using the beta version and set d3d_shadowdepth = 4,this will cause the ugly shadow...

The engine handles static shadows just fine. These are high quality setting lights and commercial version. These were probably captured from a pre-6.22 version. The middle image is sunlight only.
