here is a cool program for laying out UVs - it autimatically creates distortion free mapping - which can really be helpful.

unfold 3d

there is a functional demo for non commercial work - at least last time i checked.

UNFOLD3D version 3.0 © FRATERNAWARE Licence

Completely functional free version of UNFOLD3D.
Automatic unfolding
Maximum number of triangles limited to 1000 - not extremely usefull, but.... splitting the model into groups could do the job

But on the other hand there is a most complete version:

UNFOLD3D version 3.2 single-user STUDIO VERSION Licence

Automatic unfolding
NEW ! Multimesh Handling
Surface optimization
NEW ! Optimized packing of unfolded meshes on one unique UV surface
Licence attached to one particular machine.

--------- 995 EURO----------

Jeez, people are crazy. I use Ultimate Unwrap and it does a very decent job

The price is too high and like you said,
with unwrap 3D this is already easy
3DSMAX and some other tools already do very well Unwrapping with lot
of options.

And it exists plugins to help unwraping like Textures Layers (for 3DSMAX)
is only 295 $

Not for me !

And it would be in tools section no ?
It's not a contribution, just look at the price if you want surface optimization (995 Eur) !

I own max 7.5 - and do alot of uv work. What is different about unfold is that it uses algorythms to create distortion free mapping - more useful for high poly stuff i guess - and yes should have been in the tools section - maybe admin can move it.
