Does anyone know of or have some kind of 'painterly' shader effect.. something that can make something look like a painting, not a cartoon though..

Ello: that shader is interesting but really not a painterly shader like i was looking for, it looks more like some kind of noise mapper..

And steempipe, that's a neat link, but unfortunately it is too slow for realtime, and also it is openGl

an idea for an approach could be to take some lowresolution (different resolutions) views and render them into different textures of a quad. then mixing it in a shader with slightly different texture coordinate offsets... gonna check it out tonight:)

Hmm.. yes, but this would simply approximate gaussian blurring wouldn't it? I think you need to do some edge detection or something maybe..Unless, you offset the uvs with a dependent read, like environmental bumpapping, but instead use some kind of brush work texture..

hmm, i dont really think it would look like a blur, since a blur is using the same view. i will start some experiments. i think it should be a mix of what you statet, dependent reads, edge detection ... the link steempipe gave is that what you have in mind?? if so, i dont know if thats done only by a shader.
