Are there any plans to make a Max to mdl7 exporter or is there one that exists already? I have done some searching and can only find the max6tomdl converter and it only creates mdl5 files.

can anyone explain the difference between mdl5 and mdl7 to me? what happened to the intermediate mdl6? is this mdl the same format as the quake-native mdl format?

MDL7 has bones and now multi-textruing, mdl5 does not. And this MDL is different from that of quake. MDL6... I think that caught fire during the testing phase.

Just my two pennies but I think Max7 or Max8 (if there is one) to MDL is a trial version and is not free. There is definitely one for Max 7. You'll have to search for it though. Search the appropriate categories.

i read from somewhere that mdl7 can embed textures, does it? i did open up some mdls that show textures even not having them explicitly as separate files.

can mdl7 support transparent textures (with alpha values) too?

Yes it can, 32 bit TGAs. I'm thinking DDS cand o this, i've heard great things about that file type. I'll have to learn about it.

1. how can i make just one part of an mdl model take a texture with transparency (alpha)? e.g. a missile body (common imagemap) with a static simulated gas trail (texture with alpha)

2. can mdl take sub-objects that take transparent texture?

This is true. When you import the skin and save the mdl, you can delete the separate source file .
