Here are 2 links to threads on cgtalk discussing fur in games.
The first one deals with the fur used in Shadow of the Colossus (without the use of shaders). In the thread you will find this link which is very interesting (go read it! ) it is about the techniques used in SotC including the fur creation (but also, fake hdr, motionblur).
And this threads is made by someone who modelled klonoa with fur, there are some experiments in the thread.

mittlerweile gibt es 3 fur shader im WIKI (der vierte, von dem ich die screenshots gepostet habe, kommt in Kürze, wenn ich es noch schaffe, lighting einzubinden). Da sollte für jeden etwas dabei sein. Und framerate-killer sind diese shader auch nicht. sie benötigen lediglich ein wenig Fingerspitzengefühl bei der erstellung des Alpha-channels....

Tuschcarsten wanted to make his model furry, right? He tried it with alpha maps, but that did not work. The links I gave will give information how to make fur without a shader.
I have not tried the fur shaders in the wiki, but the method used in Shadow of the Colossus deffinitely looks better than your shader.
It is just something Tuschcarsten may want to try.
