I hate to say it, but it's a lot harder to make a non-FPS game with gamestudio than the website might have you believe. If you want to make a platformer or other non first-person-shooter game, you're going to have to knuckle figure out how the code itself works, or have the good fortune to find a gifted programmer to help out. The old A5 templates are better for platforming, I think. Check out the old techdemo level and figure out how it works, and you'll be on the right track. I still can't get my head around most of the 3D math required to make good movement code, but there are good people here who can help in a pinch.
I wouldn't start with the A6 templates, the code is harder (at least for me) to read and understand.. It's not a good idea to mix templates either-- many of them aren't compatible so you will get errors-- so I'd stick with the old A5 (unless you really want an FPS!) Just because gamestudio is more accessible than other game engines, it's still a LOT of work!
best wishes
