Not really...
But if you are intrested in something that's close, then go to my site, Developer Dimensions and enter the RM2k section.
There you can find a program called "RPG Maker 2000". It's not the best, but it's close to the older FF games...

Final Fantasy used there own Engine.

In this Engine you have two modes:

Strategic and Battle Mode.

The Strategioc Mode is only 2D.
All animated Objects are sprites. When the sprite comes near to you, it will be bigger. When it go far away it will be smaller.

In Battle Mode, there is a relly easy 3D Engine. The Most Special Effects are no realtime effects.

The A5 Engine is Stronger than FF, but you must have a very good story, and some of the best Painters of the World. Then you good thing abou making FFX

not to painfully make any of you feel wrong. But the PSX versions of final fantasy used an all 3d engine. The background was a collection of tiled/animated sprites overlayed on top of 3d level geometry paths. The characters were done in 3-d in all modes from FF7 and up. Just fyi. I'ts the same with resident eveil, just implimented in a different way. This is very achievable with a5.

Speaking of Final Fantsay, does anybody know which software was used to create the render intro of the new FF game (or the movie, I suppose they used the same anyway)?

Maya, from AliasWavefront.
Visit the site www.alias.com and ask for a "Taste of Maya". They will send you a free CD (neither shipping cost) with 30 days evaluation software and tutorials. The best is the movies and cases of Maya uses (including Squaresoft). Have fun and then be depressed (really great quality work). Discover that every great thing you have seen was made with Maya.

Well, I own MAX myself and I know that great stuff can be done with it, but I must admit that I`ve never seen anything like the FF render-movies, and just the fact that the Square artists did choose Maya and NOT Max or Softimage or whatever makes me think...

btw, I`ve checked out the Alias-HP, but somehow I just couldn`t find any information on the price...any idea? Surely no penny less then Max...?

From what I've heard, read and seen they wrote the majority of the software in house.

As with most production houses, they use a lot of different software from including MAYA and Softimage. They will also use a lot of custom plug-ins with them and, sometimes, will have custom versions of even stock software. Mega production houses often have the ear of the one's that make the software and, because of the money they spend, can often get custom features built right into the software.

MAYA is certainly not the end all of 3D software. While powerful, it has been heavily criticized for its rendering quality. Lightwave, Realsoft3D, and even MAX (with one of the better rendering plug-ins) will render out images much better than MAYA.
