I recently purchased a book on creating 2d textures by Luke Ahearn. I advise anyone interested to purchase this book complete with tutorials, reference images, and some uv maps for making skins. Using one of these tutorials I was able to create this cobblestone texture completely from scratch. I included the stone base material that I made as a resource for everyone.
