Well, i decided i want to make a game and finish it within a month, and heres what ive chosen.... im not a good modeller or texture artist so art style..... CEL SHADED! Camera system:third person Game type: Shooter Objective: rob banks to get cash to upgrade weapons.

heres the alpha screens:

I'd love comments and constuctive crits, except on the modelling jobs... im not good at them, the critiques of it wont do any good

  • I like the idea of a cell shaded terrain, good job
  • you should keep the proportions realistic, no human being is so little compared to a saloon
  • shadows? (even sprites?)
  • it's empty, just a terrain, two houses and one person - where is the rest?
  • describe your game
  • show a video
  • or release a demo

just started working on the actual game today, started the models the day before yesterday, as for shadows, well the hat on the character creates an open mesh along with the fact that it was imported from 3ds which of course is always glitchy, so i was just going to use the default z-buffer shadows, instead of stencil, but idk why they dont show up. as for the proportion, i know the sizes are screwed up, but i needed something to fill the screen so i could get an idea if im going in the right direction. i am planning to fix that along with varied buildings, cacti and various brushweeds

Check out the screenshots and trailer for the game Cassius Pearl(see link below). You can get possibly get some inspiration for the visual style given they are similar. CP is totally realtime, too as is apparent when you watch the trailer:

I think it looks really cool, I like the cartoonish look.
about the modeling it came out ok.
all you need to do is shrink the houses a little with "scale" to make it look more realstic.
the mountains look pretty cool, what program did you use for that ?
Is it gonna be like a shootem up, kinda like "Gun" ?
I would love to see a demo

@orangebrat: thanks for the idea, i didnt see a link for the trailer, just somescreenshots (the link might have been there, but i only had 2 hours of sleep so, uh yeah) they look really nice, i just wish i coud use the stencil_shadow in my game like they have.

@tek, the mountains i just used Med, made a of large hills in the back, then a couple of incredibly steep, incredibly thin hills for some country-ish look. for the skin i just took a screenshot of the top view in med cut and shrinked the pick of the actually landscape (so i could see the depths) and made it orage wherever it was high, after i applied the toon shader, thats what you end up with. Yeah it will be a shooter, i havent player gun, but the combat system will be somewhat like Resident Evil 4 seems to have (haven't played it, but have seen it in play).

Looks pretty cool so far. I'd assume this is a WIP, but it needs detail. Add a few more building, some cacti, ox skulls, tumbleweeds, rocks.

The buildings look a bit tall in comparison to the cowboy. The fence around the porch goes well above his head. The buildings need to be more in proportion to the cowboy. And they should be an old brown color to make them seem as if the sun had baked them.

its a definate wip, i only started 3-days ago, but i have made good progress, i just used big buildings scaled large to fill the screen so it didnt look so blank until i get more buildings. so far ive got a movement system, camera system, weapon aiming system, and a jumping system. Not bad for 3 days, IMHO
heres a few new screens (with cacti!):
