I think Vista might do this to games. 1. It helps consolize PC's, and sales are much better because of that. 2. It's all a part of Microsoft's business plan, which is to make money(like other business's). I don't know if anyone realized, but I have to wonder myself, how many more OS's can Microsoft make? I really don't know how much more we need in an OS. There going to need different revenue streams in the not to distance future, and I think there planning on controlling the platforms for playing your games. I understand why Gabe is upset by this, after all, Steam could very well get a huge shaft when Microsoft decides to limit games on Windows as downloaded by their servers only. At this time, I believe Mircosoft will continue to support all indie games and allow anyone who self made and self funded there game load it up on there servers. If they don't and pick and choose, a fair amount of people will shift to alternatives, but once Mircosoft releases Halo, Gears of War, and 5 other games exclusively on windows, all done by the game studios they'll buy through the years, many will shift back. We now have PC wars, fanboys attack!
The majority of games will eventually all be digitally distributed one day... Publishers will continue to buy out studios, when this day comes, they will survive on their studios.
What does this mean for the small developer? Sorta similar to the music industry, publishers/distribution wont mean as much. You'll just need the biggest portal for downloading games to put you up, get your name out there. I bet Microsoft will be one of them(check out xbox live already), and perhaps Steam to a lesser extent. I guess these still count as publishers, but you'll get a much better percentage of your games profits via download. I think this will help indies, Steam should be an indication of this(more fair playing ground). And there is much less risk.

Doesn't anyone read previous post before posting their own? Before anyone else embarrasses themselves: ******************************************************************************************************************* READ THIS BEFORE POSTING ******************************************************************************************************************* GDF Schema: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms687239.aspxGetting Started with the Game Explorer (everyone with a shareware title should read): http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms687240.aspxFor those who don't want to go and check the facts first, here is a summary: Vista does NOT require an expensive rating system for your software. It gives you the option to provide a rating (any system of your choice) as a courtesy to your customers. Posted twice now, so hopefully someone will read it :http://www.coniserver.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/721279/Main/720947/#Post721279

Yes, it isn't the end of the indie world (yet), but end users can limit which games can run on a user account using the ESRB rating system. If they use this feature, you will have to be a ESRB rated game in order to run.
The easy solution? Tell them to turn off their ESRB. It's next to useless anyhow. But this is still going to cause support problems (I expect to answer at least one of these questions a week after we add Game Explore support to 3DGS).

Isn't getting an ESRB rating completely free anyways? I mean, you can register and ask for a rating there. (I haven't been contacted ever since though, perhaps they don't rate indie games? ) Cheers

I really don't see the ESRB being a problem, after all, the user can just turn it off and play all games. It's more of an underlying thing, right now Microsoft allows users to limit all games registered under your game explorer, based on what they want. Let's imagine in a future release, Microsoft uses this same technology, except instead of letting the user choose what to limit, they put those limitations. That's what some people are probably concerned about in the future, developers having to eventually pay Microsoft royalties to have their games playable in Windows.

If they can get away with thát, then they can get away with anything. I sure hope it will never get that far,
