An Engine is just as good as it's Programmer.

also applies to many other things in life

Depends. It's a matter of personal taste, project goals, personal skills etc.

From my point of view GameStudio is an excellent tool to rapidly develop most types of games...

I have tried many engines over the years and have found gamestudio to be by far the easiest and most intuitive to use. Mainly because of the scripting which is very straightforward, robust, and relatively complete.

The renderer itself is not exactly state-of-the-art, but much effort has been put into extending it through plugins, and is under constant development by Conitec, who make regular improvements and updates--it is now capable of advanced rendering effects and high performance.

i reccomend it over other available commercial engines like Torque, Dark Basic and Blitz Basic. Unlike some packages like Ogre, Irlicht, Crystal Space, etc.. it is a complete game engine, with all the features needed to make a complete game.

Sphere Engine--the premier A6 graphics plugin.

Why don't you just inform yourself about Torque instead of wasting other people's time...

On-topic:
I agree with Matt. 3DGS has definitely improved quite a lot and is now capable of almost everything you need for making a game. Nevertheless, I think it's not completely complete, so to say - It says it's a package with everything you need. Matter-of-factly, it's got a good map editor and a solid and easy to work with engine, but seriously lacks a model editor. There is one included, but honestly it's hardly more than some crappy, buggy piece of ancient software. Also the script editor still tends to crash and things... these points still need improvement.
Other than that: If you're fine with using other tools for modeling and don't feel uncomfortable using good old Notepad for your scripting from time to time, 3DGS is for you.

From my experience 3dgs is the most complete game engine now available on the market
A lot of beginners look for advanced features but stability , ease of use , documentation etc are much more important issues if you want to finish a game

I was reading about Blender's game engine, and in previous versions, it seems that it was really only good for *small* games/levels (though in more recent releases I believe the engine may have been disabled because of some major problems). Sure, it looks great--better than 3DGS, but all that rendering quality comes at a cost. I'm sure if one were to make a game with MAYA, it would look just as terrific, but anything other than a "small" level will be a huge load on the processor. Someone correct me if I'm way off-base here.

Blender has a new beta version out, as someone on this board posted elsewhere, so I don't know if and how the game engine might have been improved. Given your familiarity with Blender, you may want to give it a whirl. In the meantime, you may also want to download the demo version of 3DGS and try it out. Is 3DGS perfect? No. No engine is. But as others have pointed out, it is fairly easy to work with, and for those of us who are NOT programmers (like me), there is a lot of help to be found in these forums beyond the initial Conitec support period. I'm not a programmer, and have no real potential to become one without a lot of time and effort that I would rather spend using for game design and learning the tools, so 3DGS is probably the best "fit" for me since the programming has been simplified so much. I still intend to sit down and learn C-script, but my intention is to do so after my main project has been 100% built in terms of level architecture, model/entity placement and textures, since I'll need the C-script for interface/walkthrough options of my project. I don't know of any other game design software that would have allowed me to get as far as I have already without having to be proficient in a programming language beforehand.

Hi,

I've bought A6 recently. Alberto's comments are absolutely right. It is
very good if you actual interested in finishing a project not just playing around.

Also there are various, very good user made plugins available now or soon which give enhanced rendering/Shaders, AI and Physics.

The best engine for you will come down to your specific needs and skills but
A6 certainly has its strenghts.
