Maybe this post should go to bugs forum... I did render just one frame of my avi movie and save it as bmp. Then I've change the logodark that start in all levels, for my bmp. The problem is not of the avi, because my logo.bmp also look weird when I use it with A5. Just to remember that all my images and avis look great with Windows Media Player. See for yourself! With A5: Without A5: Thank you! A5 5.51 Commercial.

Hiya. Rendering a .bmp isn't going to work. There is no compression for the .bmp. Cinipak is a pretty poor compressor. I've had the most luck with Intel Indeo and DivX. The Indeo compresser tends to "grey down" colors a bit, so you might want to up the light intensity and/or tweek the colors a bit more to compensate. Bottom line, unless your avi is with uncompressed pics, you will get a degradation; that's the nature of the beast with compression. You save on file size, as well as speed of playing the avi, but you loose quality. That's the trade off. ![[Frown]](images/icons/frown.gif)

its because A5 is only 16 bit color, hence the color banding...

Cinepak is an old and widely installed codec. Though not the best compressor, it is adequate for most AVIs. There are many other codecs you can use for AVI files, but you must keep in mind that in order for your customer to view your AVIs, they must have the codec installed on their system. DivX is very new, and not installed on most machines. The latest codec from Microsoft is WMV. This codec should be installed on XP machines, but I'm not sure about older operating systems.
You will have to check your customer's system for the codec you are using, and if it's not there, you'll need to install it. The best bet here is to use a widely installed codec.
MPEG1,2 and 4 are standards for a different type of video compression from AVI or WMV. MPEG1 (.mpg or .mpeg) is a terrible compressor, used for low quality web video. MPEG2 is currently used for DVD authoring. MPEG4 is the latest standard (more than just a codec), which is still in development.
You'll need to check on terms of use for the codec you choose. Indeo (Intel) or others may require a license for authoring a commercial title.

mpg1 gets used for web video very rarely. it's most famous for being the VCD codec. if you use higher bitrates than the vcd bitrate you can get very good quality and it has a much better quality/compression ratio than cinepak in my opinion. an advantage is that it has very low system requirements and it comes with every OS. the low system requirements come in handy when using in a 3d game... a disadvantage is that the resolution is limited to 352x288...
mpg2 requires an installed DVD player software or a directshow filter which isn't included in any windows version as far as i know...

I'd just like to add that MPEG1 is not limited to any resoulution. It should work at 640*480 and at 800*600. I have tried this and it works fine. Just use a good compressor. The best free one is TMPGENC ( TMPGENC Hompage ). Try this and if you avoid using the presets and set the encoding options manually you can use any resoultion you want and at bitrates of 2500+ the movies look great.
