Hello

Is 3dgs able to handle real time day / night cycles ?

The player sets ,for example a time conversion factor Kt = 12
In 1 hour , the position of the sun and the shadows turn slowly , either continuosly or step by step from day to night

Is it possible ( realistically ) to do somethig like that ?

What about A7 ?

yes it is, you can adjust sun settings like altitude with c-script and changing the sky can be done with skyspheres

BASIC programmers never die, they GOSUB and don't RETURN.

OK, but about the shadows in real time ?

Yes and no. I have day/night cycles in my project as well, and it seams to be very difficult to create realistic shadows. When you use levelblocks then you can forget it, because there are only static shadows supported by 3dGs for blocks. That means that shadows are saved during buildprocess. If you build up your levels only with models you can use (if you have com) stencil shadows (which are dynamic) or shaders for creating the shadows depending on the sun position. I think there is also a shadowmap generator for download somewhere here in the forum, but I don't think that it could be used in realtime.

Thanks , this is what I had in mind, shaders
Can anyone else provide any further information ?
Can the future A7 be of use for such application ?

In this shadercollection you can find a softshadow shader, that has to be set to the materials. I don't know how the shader works and how he handles the shadows, nor do I know whether it can be used for dynamic shadows depending on sun. I also asked for a global softshadow shader (may be with sylex) in another thread, but didn't received an answer yet.

Here you can find the shadowgenerator, but as I said I don't think that it is fast enough to be implemented in a game with dynamic shadows in realtime.

I found a Dynamic Shadows Demo on DX Studio Web site

" You can turn the world with the left/right cursor keys, or turn the light with Z/X. The real-time shadows will adapt to the light's position accordingly "

So it should be something relativly easy to implement
