holla, the past days i spent my spare time on this project. its a minigame called simplex. use mouse or cursor / wasd / space to play it.

more images as well as a download: follow me

any feedback is appreciated. as well as comments on how it runs on your machine. i found some issues while entities are created there is a noticable loading time i have no clue why its there

thanks,
ello

Ello:
This is a great start. The lighting and explosions look very good. The flight behaviour of your ship and of the enemies is great. I like the gradient background.

Here are some problems that I found:
The player-ship is too dark. Often you do not see the ship especially when you play it at daylight.
The ships with the visible shields slow fps down. My system with GeForce 6800 GT (256 MB memory), 1 GB RAM and Athlon 64 (3200+) becomes unplayable slow.

thanks for your reply, frank. i was afraid of that. i dunno what causes this. atm i have no clue about it, since its lowpoly, and the funtion of it isnt that complex, too.

i guess i need to create a gamma slider, since on my laptop it's bright enough and it has been calibrated, too. its always the same problem with laptop and desktop brightness:)

I like it a lot as well. It's very cool, controls are great.

One thing I noticed: the tripple laser seems to be moved before the ship moves, causing it to lag behind. just reposittion the lasers after the ship's moved, and it'll be fine.
I like the enemy ships a lot. cool!
you should definately keep this up, it'll be a fun game!

hey there, thanks for your comments. i've uploaded a new version with some main improvements on the performance. it would be nice if you check (again) how it works for you.

meteors now leave a superAddOn sometimes
if you run out of ammo ammoPacks come along
healthPacks have been reduced
score system has changed a bit

thanks:)

i added lionts' gammaramp dll so brightness can now be changed by pgup and pgdn keys (including the sideeffect what happens if you go to negative gamma:)

i tried to adjust my monitorsettings, so it would be cool if someone could tell me if the overall initial brightness is still too dark

ok, played it and i have some minor points:
- too few enemy's, it seemed ages before another enemy showed up
- the enviroment isn't really attractive (maybe make it more spacy)

good things:
- the gameplay was superb
- the graphics are nice too
- love the explosions

oh and the game isn't too dark (at least for me)

EDIT:
ok the second time i played it there where more enemy's so i guess that's random

thanks for your comment! yes, the enemies are random (according to the scores)
i found out that for example a gf5700 makes the game really slow. i run a gf6800 which does the job.

adressing the environment, i already thought about it, but i needed to get feedback about the performance until i add stuff. i thought about starfields/nebulas (from the nasa-gallery), planet-surfaces and some abstract scifi backgrounds

i will add some more enemies, too, different types, like one that will try to surround the player (that would also create the need for another powerUp : backshot) and some which create a bunch of shots going to circular directions.. maybe some mines, too
