I got horrible framerate with a simple shader that muliplied the shadowmap by 2.
It's unusable in A6...

Did you try this code? I've tried it and (after fixing an minor error) it ran at a solid 75fps when used on 1 texture on blocks everywhere (not too big of a level indeed). 4 lights is no problem. When I tried to assign the same material to 2 block textures though it cut the fps in half, running at a steady 30fps. I do think this shader works best on models like you say, because when applied to a model it stays at 75fps,
