i experimented with an ingame light mapper this weekend:

it can automatically generate light maps for a model based level directly in the engine. it already supports multiple colored point lights with falloff. casting shadows can be enabled or disabled for lights. (i always wanted this possibility in wed! it makes using fill lights much easier.)

you can change light settings in the engine and let the light map update immediately.

it's still experimental and work in progress and i hope everything works out.

There's a workaround in WED but it may have some undesirable side effects if you're use per poly collision or other situations I haven't thought about. Any object that you don't want to cast a shadow make passable and then place an invisible block around it for collision purposes. Passable and invisible blocks will not cast a shadow.

Nice idea. Keep us posted on your progress.

Very nice. Does it work with every models or must it be a model with a special uv-set (non-repetition parts)?

what i meant is that shadow casting of lights can be turned off. this can be helpful if you want to use it as a fill light which shouldn't cast any shadows. shadow casting of objects can be turned off too. you just have to make such objects passable during the light mapping process.

there doesn't have to be a special uv-set. it is supposed to work automatically with every model but i haven't tested it with very complex ones yet. i hope it will work with other models too and not only with my simple test models.

@vent: OK, I understand now. That makes sense.

@SPIKE: I'm only all green so I can edit my Starving Guide when it needs to be done. It hadn't received an update in over a year and I think they were tired of my spam/request posts in that thread.
