I'm still thinking.. why in earth you need another webcam, create caliber instead =D

"move your finger to the bottom of the screen"... etc and then compare the size of the finger to register the vertical movement.

Edit: I suppose you cannot take depth image from webcam.. it would be so much easier to notice both vertical and horizontal movement =/

I was thinking that you dont even need to place it in the corner, if you just check and compare on size you know the height. Yea guess that would be kinda buggy, two webcams works better then.

Nicely done !

I have tried doing motion detection in a room (i.e. find the moving person) and the main problem was noise from the camera unless there was daylight- at least in the video it seems that you can reliably detect the outline- I am guessing the LCD backlight helps things too.
As others have pointed out you should be able to determine y position from the width of the fingertip. If you don't want to do that you can at least speed things up by requesting a smaller (QCIF size) video stream from the camera.

the problem with the determinationby finegrtip size is, that ou would have to recalibrate it for every person, and in the moment you would "turn" your finger(= not holding it even) the cursor would go kind of crazy.

Still I think that two cameras would be the best solution.

@Florian: No it doesnt, just if i would press it

@JOstie & Inestical: No, a corner cam would not be good, look the begining of this post

@Samb: Yeah, but a human finger is way more genuine

@Marco: Thank you, both for the compliment and the tips!

@Nemesis: Thank you!

I'd really encourage you to look into the method using just one webcam, sounds like a good solution, eventhough it might need some quick user calibration of some kind (or you make it check every once in a while whether things still are the same and if not make it adjust?).

Keep us posted!

Cheers

I know, I did, dunno why, sometimes I have way too complicated solutions while there are much easier ones to use, haha...ha :|

insetical: sorry

phemox: I can offer it as alternative, but trust me, it WILL be verry buggy and inaccurate.

Jostie: Think easy

Great work, as always.

Are you planning to study IT, Computer Science or something like this?

I can tell you: You would be perfect for it.
