the problem: you lack smaaaal details, meaning that either your planet is very small, or you have big areas..

The last one really confused me, to me they seem super-detailed. I can pick out little hills and features in very small locations. What kind of detail do you think needs to be added?

Color variation within the color scheme is needed to give the impression of details. For example, water is indeed usually blue (unless on some cool unknown alien planet ), but not just 1 color blue. Add some lighter blue spots, some darker blue spots, go crazy on adding these differences.

Personally I like realistic planets, but the following image should give you an idea what I mean with the color variation on the surface;

You're definitely right on the water variation, thanks for pointing that out. What do you think of something like this?

Yes, that's much much better already!

HI, good to see a spacie going for it, I'm a big fan of Freelancer, Homeworld, Descent etc.

A point I'd like to make is that your planets show far too much detail as though they are viewed from an aeroplane rather than deep space or even orbiting distance.
Add to this point that any habitable or even inhospitable planets close enough to the sun to be lit up usually have a cloud cover of some discription obscuring most of the surface at any given time.

Cloud thinning and clearing is to be expected but is not a constant.

Reviewing these elements may add a bit more atmosphere to your overall look because as it currently stands for me, its oversaturated with details (as funny as that sounds...)

So..from a reasonable distance, cloud covered, as the player gets closer, thining clouds.

Keep up the good work, its great!

Yes , it is detailed , but when he adds the atmosphere it'll look better. I once tryed to make something like that with 9 more transparent blue spheres but it didnt look very good I guess that will work with shaders better.

PS.: Try making the water a little brighter. Right now it looks good , but try with brighter to see if it looks even better. After all you're gonna sell that

Clouds!

Both of these shots are in-game. The clouds are:
  • 960 polys (same as the planets)
  • 1024x512 TGA skin with alpha transparency
  • totally seamless
I ran into so many problems getting the transparency working, but I'm pretty excited with the end result. What do you guys think?

Great looking clouds Zelek
Nice solution, but wouldn't sprites could have done the same thing ??

Cheers

No, i think sprites won't look good. Now i think you should apply some envmap to make oceans shiny
