Oh yeah, forgot to mention, my aim was to get in the direction of the characters of rose online (an mmorpg), not entirely the same, but at least close:

This kind of cartoony style was the aim,
so clothing needs to have a different skin, but that will be done later

The model itself is good, the texturing looks done properly but you should consider changing the name A more universal name like Cindy or sort like because Truus it's a typical name from the Netherlands or from Belgian ^^
But that little detail is your choise, the overal look of this model is quite positive from my side The cartoony look is present but could be improved like you mentioned so good luck on achieving your goal !!

Cheers

thats a little over board. not cool at all. he may be new to 3dgs. "When criticizing other peoples's work, don't forget: even making a bad game is a very hard and difficult task." dont put his hard work down like that. sure it may not look good to us because we are more experienced but instead of laughing at him try to help him get better. thats what criticism is.

@Frazzle: Thanx but this is just a temporary WIP name, of course in the game she wont be called Truus . I'm just bad at thinking good names when constructing things, they might turn out very bad in the end and then I spended 4 hours thinking of a whole story comming up with a name for nothing ghehe. So that's why I called her Truus for the time being.

@Not_me: lol, no worries, he's laughing because of the name, not of the model as he already said. It's a funny name I choose because it's really really default dutch, like sjaan, piet, jan, those names are very standard. Yet almost nodoby uses them anymore to name their child with those names, so they get kinda old dutch. It's hard to explain why this is so hilarious, but it just is .
So it's not a bad thing he laughed, actually it was ment to be funny for the dutch people only, it was just a little overreacted and it's streching out the layout.

And please please cut the HA-HA's to just a few? I use Firefox

No offense though, but why do you think it's a bad model, as I can notice from your post .

Well what this is what he exactly said in Dutch, translated to Englisch:
Quote:

Seriously, I was crying which was caused by the amount of laughing I've had by the name of your character !! Truus, just genius !!

I guess, like dennis mentioned, this wasn't caused by the model itself but with the name A 'small' comprehensive joke don't you think ^^
Btw, Jostie isn't new to 3DGS

Cheers

Well, it's not the amount of post you make but the information you advice to users to help them out. Btw some users are more active than others

first of all my apologies, jostie, i have to leave soon for the day so i couldn't read everyone's comments. i may just be re-iterating what other people say.

Quote:

I'm not sure if this is a good way to make a model, 8 to 10 faces per verticle, and if anyone has tips to improve this it's apreciated.

that's absolutely fine. but so low-poly means you need to either normal map it, or lower the amount of lighting affecting it (via script) and hand-paint all the shadowing (like in the rose online example), because otherwise it will look really weird. you don't have to hand-paint any more shadow if you don't want, but i personally wouldn't use any gourraud shading.

i'm confused about the poly-count -- even with double-sided hair, i don't see how the entire model (clothes and everything included) could add up to more than 1000 polies (and even that's pushing it).

it's definitely a decent model. model-wise, i'd just fiddle with the hair.

skin-wise, i'd add more variety to the skin -- faked ambient occlusion (wikipedia it if you don't know what that is), variance in colour (redder cheeks, yellower knuckles, little details.

Truus: When I say evenly spaced, I mean that the geometry should flow evenly around the model.
Also, the z- order problem with models is not really a problem, you can set it in Lite-C with the d3d_entsort command or use code that once applied to a model does the same thing.
TGA's shouldn't lower your frame rate on the average computer. For instance, I have between 400-500 tga's with alpha, all at 512x512 resolution some decaled, some not, some skinned, some freestanding, in a current level that I'm doing. My frame rate does not drop even a single frame with or without them.
Using 4tri planes with tga alphas for hair will help you create realist or cartoon hair that looks far superior to other methods, and renders the same or better.

Low Poly Hair Example

you can find me with my face in the keyboard, unshaven, listening to some nameless techno tragedy, and hashing through code over a cold cup a stale joe. __________________________________ yours truly

@Frazzle: Doesn't mean that low amount of posts says I post intelligent replies I think 80% is wasted on morbius ^^.

@Julz: Thanks! I will look for it on wiki. Color variation and adding details is pretty hard with low poly, ugly pixels appear very fast .
The polycount was strange to me as well, but if you count 8 to 10 faces per verticle with 300 verts, you come close to 3000 faces, plus the double hair, I guess that sums 3018 .
I agree on the shadows as well, I wont use gourad shading, only painted shadowing on terrains and models.

@oldschoolj:
Isn't my model's geometry evenly spreaded then? Looks pretty evenly flowed to me ^^.
Well then I will definately try and implement tga hair, didn't knew about d3d_entsort . I know very little about Lite-C yet, recently bought it. And that example is really cool.
Thanx!

oh and you do know that my real name is not Truus eh?
