You know it's kinda funny to me, well not really.
Consider this: RPG's and RPG/Adventure games are among the highest grossing, and most popular games on the market. Why is there so little support for the primary features needed to make RPG developers lives much easier?
Although I have developed a temporary solution on my own, there are two common ways of marking a target for battle. This is fundemental in the style games formentioned, and considering the depth in which conitec supports other types of game features, this should have been developed as a resource a long time ago.
1- Decal system as you mentioned. Although this is very nice, it is not as flexible as option two. It should have been released years ago, and is in my opinion a high priority.
2- Projection shader. Admittably not the easiest shader or shader to incorporate, it is also the most flexible, and dazzling selection system you can create. Conitec should have released this a long time ago as a plugin for the shader challenged. And judging by the lack of projection shaders (there are some very talented people in this community when it comes to shaders), we probably wont see one until they do.
If you think that you don't need a projection shader in your game, watch the videos found here and think again:
ArcaneFXNow I luv a challenge, and figuring stuff out on my own. I suppose I could create a crap load of animated textures, turn em sideways, attach particles to models (I will have to do all this anyway with or without prj. shader), but the fact is, without this shader, I will never achieve the lighting effect, and other possibillities that it could bring.
So for now it's just my little selection system, and sideways alpha channel tga. Wake me up when decals show up.... snore
