...which makes Sphere basically useless.

That's abit harsh Firoball, Sphere is a pro/quality product only intended for users who have Nvidia cards up-to-now

NO NO.. this is all wrong.. the current version of Sphere has no such problems, and ATI cards work fine.. you have misunderstood.

I was talking about a future version that I am working on...

Sphere Engine--the premier A6 graphics plugin.

Let me rephrase: I think the upcoming Sphere version will be useless as long as Nvidia doesn't have a monopoly (I don't think monopolies are good - but different topic) and ATI cards failing to run Sphere are common.

You lose a lot of potential customers.

Or you need that long for your project that common ATI cards finally run Sphere

It is possible to make an alternative code-path to support ATI (using the render-to-vertex-buffer function, or just a CPU implmentation..blah)..but this is slower and irritating because of how it has to be done...if you have a whole bunch of objects that have to be displaced..I think you need to do the RTVB pass for them all..lame.

It's really annoying that ATI didn't support pixel shader 3.0 correctly on its DX9 hardware...but I don't know what the new cards are like.. does ATI even make a DX10 card yet?

I suggest to anyone who wants to run next-gen graphics to go with Nvidia from now on, as ATI has dropped the ball more than once.

Yes, they make: e.g. Radeon HD 2900 XT

OK I've done some research and it looks the ATI DX10 cards like the HD 2900 do support vertex textures in DX9.. this is a good thing.
