I know there is a German thread about DX10 but i cant follow it...So here is an English thread...

The basic question is when is A7 going to support DX10? While obviously many people don't have DX10 or a card that supports its features yet, some of us do, and soon many more will. DX10 look very cool and I cant wait to start messing around with Shader 4.0 and geometry shaders.

No, because the whole engine would have to be converted to DX10. This means all D3D calls and so on hae to be DX10, not DX9, including the device and object, etc... It's a whole new API.

Actually converting the engine over without any new features shouldn't be more than a week of work or so.. I guess the main reason for not doing it now is that they (obviously) want to still support DX9, so it would be a pain to maintain 2 versions.

What would be nice however, is a Dx10 dirty beta version that could be released so poeple can mess with it until such time that Conitec decides to make the DX10 jump, which might be a year or more away...

Obviously, the jump from DX10 to DX9 is bigger than DX8 to DX9 because not so many people have Vista yet.

Well the Acknex engine never was state of the art featurewise and even commercial games don't have DX10 yet. Right now there are only some "afterwards patched but in principle DX9 games" and even less real DX10 games - to be honest Bioshock is the only game that comes to my mind that has such a "real" DX10 functionality. So this will take a while...

I also guess that Conitec will head straight for DX10.1 in order not to have all the work twice and 10.1 hasn't even been released yet...

Enjoy your meal

The use of DX 9 will probably be with us for quite some time since Microsoft has decided to support Windows XP with updates to at least 2014. So, not knowing how DX is implemented in the Acknex engine this is a shot in the dark and is perhaps a funny question to those of you who know the ins and outs of DX code.

Would it not be possible without too much hassle to have a switchable compiler where you could switch between DX9 and DX10.1 and where DX9 compiling would ignore codes of Shader versions above 3? (kind of like switching between 2 and 4 wheel drive to use a realworld metaphor). I would think most fx files would have fallback code anyway to at least Shader version 3.

And if this is possible, can it be done with a plugin?

cheers,
tindust

To be honest: We even do not use DX9 effectively. So I see no good reasons to switch to DX10. First some basic functions like lighting (per-pixel), soft-shadows, rendering (e.g. particles, decals) should be shader based.

There is still a lot of unused potential in shader-model 2 and 3.

Only a few people switched to Vista and therefore DX 10 is exclusive and if you ask me - it is a very bad marketing strategy of Microsoft to push Vista with that game-API.

I hope Open-GL becomes competitive again.

which software used to push the graphics barrier further in the last decade? id-games like quake 2, 3. the first games with omnipresent normal mapping and a unified shadowing/lighting system? doom3, chronicles of riddick. what do all these games engines have in common? the base on openGL...

What does that have to do with anything? Id games are OpenGl because Carmack likes that API...

id Tech 5 is based on DX9. So even id-Software switched to DX now. But they said that DX9 will be sufficient at the moment and they simply ignore DX10. Maybe they will support OpenGL in the future as well if a new version comes up.

But the problem with DX is the monopoly of Microsoft. You see what happened and how they (mis-)use it this time (DX10 and Vista). This can happen again in the future. OpenGL could be free of that.

But also 3DGS uses DX so we have to live with MS, Vista and all that. Nevertheless we still can improve even a DX9 rendering a lot.
