lod.zip ~2mb

cursor left/right = switch lod stage
right mouse button = orbit camera
scroll wheel = zoom
ctrl/alt = wireframe mode
drag the target vertices button for adjusting the value.

it's a very early quickly done version which may have lots of bugs.

hmmm...i wasn't able to get it to convert my models, i clicked the reduce button on the second stage and poof, windows error, of course i'm using a6.5 models, that may have something to do with it, but if this was working for me, it would be an awesome tool

yes, now i also found a model which crashes. i will have to examine this...

<edit> hm... with some models it works, with some models not. i don't have a clue yet what's different with the problematic models. ...starts to look like another of my unfinished projects. </edit>

with the marine.mdl of the a7 shadertest project the crash happens too. i could isolate it to the left hand of that character. it looks like the mesh is non-manifold there (edges get shared by more than 2 triangles).

i think the bug has to do with a certain amount of vertexes, if it goes higher than it allows it will cause an error, it's just a theory but you never know

vent...please keep on developing this great thing! Now it still crashes with most of my models...but soon this won't be anymore I could image YOU making a plugin that generates automatic on the fly LOD stages with all models within a project...just before the game loads.

the problem is not, that a mesh is not closed..and also not the polycount...
loopix trees crashes, but some of my own plant models don't...some of my older modles work, but some of the new not. It appears pretty randomly, but always by the same models.

But that tool is already great!

what i meant with non-manifold is this:

no edge must be shared by more than two faces. i will have to write an algorithm which finds such cases and fixes them by doubling vertices. this won't be that easy.
