If you can display any text on your keys then you could easily switch between complex software tools like Blender, Lightwave, XSI and you dont have to wonder again and again the key konfigurations. You just switch the display and you can read what button activates the rotate function etc.

Ahhhh, finally someone who gets this. Dont' you see? This is the future of keyboards... well maybe not this exact model, but the idea that the keys are monitors too allows for what frank said and more. Imagine making a game like "whack a mole" where you have to search out the "red" key on your keyboard. Or how about a strategy game where a ECM attack will have the effect of scrambling your keyboard for a few seconds. Or how about changing the language character set and not having to guess which key is the diacritical "n"!

Laugh all you want... mostly for the reason Frank said but for many more, I personally feel this is the way that all keyoards are going to go... you'll see... you'll all see... and then, you'll be sorry... oh yeah, REAL sorry....

hey, i like it too - its just, I've seen it one year ago already, only that now its released

Neat, I heard of this before, but never seen it. This would probably work well internationally. If you could easily swap out an English keyboard for something else. I also like the little pictures of Photoshop and Firefox, easy for starting programs without your desktop. Could very well be what all keyboards will turn into, just as long as it's comfortable to type.

They had problems with the "lighting" of the keys. This is also why the price is that huge and why they have some delay.
The idea is very nice and useful, but since I'm guilty in several keyboard murders, this is nothing for me.

...because she doesn't care or understand it, she's just there to look pretty.

I think the keyboards allright. If it became popular, then you could probably make some cool games with it . But it's also more crap running on your system, and distracting you...

A visual keyboard would have no practical use for me, since I never look down when I type.

It looks neat, but it feels like a solution looking for a problem (IMHO).

True, I hardly ever look down too, hadn't thought about that. I've also noticed that lights on a keyboard isn't always practical, but can be distracting. Take for example the G15 logitech keyboard.

Cheers

It is easy to check out:
Just try to work in the dark at your pc.

I learned to type with 10 fingers without looking at the keyboard.
But I realize that I do look at the keyboard while playing games or while modelling. So I have problems to work in the dark and I always switch a light on if I work at nights.

So it still makes sense to illuminate or display keys. But my vision is more than only colors and letters. There could be little icons for special functions and much more just changing while you change your software. So you can learn a software faster and at the end you might not need them but it feels better.

There is also a big difference if you work only with one software or with dozens of them. If I program with Delphi then I know all my shortcuts and dont have to use the menu or the mouse.
But when I switch between Lightwave, ZBrush, Bodypaint3d, Milkshape, Blender, WED, MED, Torque, Beyond Virtual, C4 and Fragmotion then I never have the chance to remind all those keys. And I need all those tools to create and test artworks for my customers.

If you use a lot of different tools, having a row or two of user defined function keys makes sense. But, having a display in each key is kind of overkill.

To be really useful however, there needs to be a standard. That way, every application can take advantage of it and you can have lots of different hardware solutions to pick from.

Its good for use in Germany, as the german Keys are set differntly to the english
layout. Switching it without plugging in another keyboard is a good alternative.

Also for porfessional editing, that have many keys assigned to shortcuts.
