i kinda assumed the video on kotaku would be the same as a really awful old video i saw of the game, but that was actually really good the cutscenes were of similar quality (and in a fair few parts better quality) than those awful KOTOR cutscenes, and that's supposed to be a AAA game.

i'm keen to give the demo a go now.

Great Job Ran Man.....

I totally agree with Fastlane, well spoken/written my friend.

I was getting more and more upset reading the negative statements about Ran's game. I was going to post something simular to Fastlanes, but he did a much better job than I would have. I would have titled it "The Day the Fun Died".

The real shame of this is reviewers and so called writers about our industry completely miss the point. They take this game out of context and compare it to 10 million dollar budget games. This is completely unfair and does damage to the whole indie game industry. Many casual player will find value in Ran's game, it's a huge diservice to all indies when they are being compared to much larger budgeted works.

Then wanabe game developers critize the game also, like they have a fricking clue. The maturity level around here has dropped significantly.

The real key is. "IS IT FUN" to the person playing it. That can only be judged by those that play it, not wanabe dorks....

Quote:

Ran Man, congrats on getting so much attention on you game. It is admittedly unpolished but it goes to show that an unpolished good idea and hard work will get you way further than a polished bad idea and no work. Hopefully you can turn the attention on this game into attention to your other works and perhaps even a sequel!

Fastlane, lets try not to even judge whether is polished or not. That's a negative subjective statement. Personally I looked at it as a style. Many of the new causal gamers will also look at Ran's art as a style. Hopefully Ran will get a chance to reach those people, if the reviewers do'nt turn this into a joke. Such a shame....

I think the next IDIOT that condems a game on this forum for using the standard textures supliied with 3DGD should be banned forever....

Ran you did a helluva job. I am very proud of you. I am disgusted with all the people throwing crap at your expense in the press and on these forums.

Much Respect to Ran, Zoo Racing and Fastlane,

Ken

Well, I didn't want to post here again, seeing as everything I said was being taken out of context, but after reading your post, I couldn't stay away.

I haven't read one post here, that criticizes the game for not being the next Crysis and not having the latest "uber-shaders", all I read were normal suggestions for RanMan to make his game not only fun, but also good-looking, without a $10 mil. budget!

Well, at least I am proud of myself for writing normal arguments and clear suggestions (even if RanMan doesn't take them into consideration), without lowering my-self to name calling! How low can you go? Calling people who write suggestions about a game dorks and idiots is against the forum rules and quite childish, if not worse!

And calling all of us wannabee game developers, dorks, idiots and speaking on behalf of the "new casual gamers" who will look at the style as an art, is not a subjective statement?

Again,
I'm done with my rant! ^^

gameplay and game design forum, right?

let's see...

as far as design goes, the concept has potential. i like the idea of dance-party mode (in theory), and good on him for getting an original soundtrack.

as far as gameplay goes, i didn't enjoy much of it. i laughed at the menu with all the animals, and i laughed at a few things in the game, but as much as people say that it's all about being "FUN!!!!11", it wasn't. some things are a matter of taste, but i have some issues with:
random falling pillars. that seemed to be a vague attempt at making the racing more interesting, but unlike the rolling barrels which can be dodged with good enough reflexes, how many moving pillars you run into seems to be completely determined by the game and by no part the player's skill or reflexes. they simply pop out too fast for the animals' turn-speeds to dodge.
steering. this is perhaps more subjective, but the steering of the animals felt very unnatural. i can't give it another go to try and put it better, because i've uninstalled the demo, but the ability to side-step would be much, much more ideal than steering the whole animal for things like dodging rolling barrels or simply overtaking other players. more polish should've been put into the gameplay of a game that depends almost entirely on being "fun".

at least it's quite funny.

Hi Everyone,

Hey, I just found this thread. Oh quite interesting.
Thanks Nardulus and Fastlane and everyone.

Quote:

There is a reason why that video is put up on such many places - because people laugh at it!

Yes, but that is exactly what it is supposed to do. I wanted to use humor to help people laugh and to think about God too. God is laughing and the people are and I think it is great. If they laugh at me, then it is okay. lol That movie is almost 90,000 views now.

About The Graphics:
Well guys, listen I'm human okay? Let me share personal things with you. Last year when I finished the ZOO RACE game, well I was also notified that I was going to be laid off from my job here at Intel corporation. I was scared, so I wanted to finish up the game and concentrate on finding another engineering job here. Instead of "shelving" the game and doing it later, I worked very hard to finish it.

Anyways, after the layoff notification, I found another manager here that hired me, so oh well. Maybe I should trust in God better, right?

Sorry, if I seemed to ignore you people back then, but I was scared. Scared for me and for my family. I spent thousands on development, and now I had no job. What would you do? I just worked so hard to finish it quickly.

But, thanks to Blatsallat and Nitro777 and it got finished. Excessus helped with shaders and yes, there is a big difference between shaded models and un-shaded.

Quote:

how did it get on Kotaku?

Well, how did it get on Kotaku? I don't know actually. I
think if you make a video funny enough, then people will link to it. I'm getting video links to all type of forums now. It's kinds crazy.

The negative publicity is because that people are comparing the graphics to console games mostly. Geez, it's hard for an indie developer to make large 3D levels like this and compete on consoles.

And I'm thinking strongly about doing another game. Why not right? And maybe some of you guys can help me, maybe? I don't know.

I know that helping people to laugh and think about God in a funny way is unique and I think it is important.

Thanks everyone. Nice talking with you guys.
Ran

Well, I understand that RanMan and I must say, that I wasn't laughing at you At least now I see, that you too understand that the game could use some polishing... ^^
But one question - you say it is hard for an indie developer to make a large level like this and make it look good. Why did you make a racing game with a large level then? Why not make a small game - it would require less work, you could concentrate more on stuff like graphics, major bugs, etc. And if you really want to put god in games like this and make them fun, then I can't imagine anything better suited for this, than small casual games.

an understandable situation. I would've been only a little extra effort, but I see now that you hadn't had the extra time to spare. well hopefully this next game your working on you can go the extra mile and increase the demographic of your game

Hi Leonardo,

Quote:

Why did you make a racing game with a large level then?

I like 3D games where you can see "long distance". In "The Zoo Race" game, for example, you can see lots of tree's and when jumping the hurdles, you can see a long ways away. Even when you run though the fire, you can see fairly long distance, so that is what I like in 3D games.

The short distance games like quake or half-life give me a stomach-ache. lol

Yes agreed. Go the extra mile next time. lol
