If we decide to script our own arena, I'm willing to get involved . EDIT: No really, it could be pretty cool, if participants could write and model their own robot, limited by a template movement/fight code and certain rules... who knows what could come out

But you need to define a goal without a goal you can't win, and without scripting rules, how can one define a goal . Nobody will allow their robot to die if there are no rules anyway ^^. Maybe a maze indeed where a certain coordinate should be reached. This can either be manually or through an algorithm, or complex movement system, whatever you wish. Rules such as collision detection and gravity can be at the server side, while looping through all the entities. The rest is up to the player. Anything is allowed when the server script has the last words anyway... .

of course. it cant be that trivial, but say, you have different values. e.g. the sum of armor + speed needs to be the same for all. the ammount of energy/ammo at the beginning is the same. the impact values for certain predefined weapons are fixed (laser, gun, chainsaw, etc.)
but the art of detecting the environment, sort of remembering the past way, the way how a robot reacts if others appear and how they act. thats all up to the creator
just imagine you have to create a robot which by itselfs considers what an attack is. no matter if the opponent is flying , driving or sneaking
