g'day! i'm getting new RAM. gonna replace my old RAM. i'm thinking about going up to 3GB (i remember reading somewhere the 4th GB isn't worth it; any thoughts on this? i'm on XP).
i basically want to know what's the best (fastest, anything else that's relevant) type of RAM to buy?
i don't know what you need to know about my system to make good suggestions, and i probably don't know where to find that info, so if you can tell/ask me that would be good too.
thanks

3x 1gb ddr2 800mhz rams will do it but you have to chack if your mainboard supports that type/speed of ram.
go start->run->enter msinfo32.exe press [Enter]
that will list all your system info. (Probably your mainboard listed as mainboard or "System Model/Type").

wow, thanks guys. i didn't realise how much there was to think about. my mainboard doesn't appear to support more than ddr2 667 Mhz, so i guess that's what i'm getting. i'll do a little looking into it and if anyone can confirm what lostclimate said about dual channels that would be much appreciated; not that i don't trust you mate, but i want to be sure thanks for the heads-up, julz

it appears to say NOT to use the /3gb switch. that seems to only affect virtual memory.

I got 4GB (4x1GB, dual channels), since I'm going to upgrade to Vista soon.

At http://www.kingston.com/ you can choose your mainboard oem and the type, and it will show you what kind of configuration is applicable to your system, and will also give a recommendation which of their sticks are fitting to your system. But mostly every other vendor will have a similar database online if you have a preferred one.
Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.
