Hi,
if you had to choose between two options for a MMO Game, what would you choose?

1) A Windows only version with good looking shaders
2) A non shader version which supports linux and macintosh as well?

What do you prefert?
single choice

I prefer multiOS, for it would ...

  • Give texture artists freedom to actually create neat stuff
  • Support older machines
  • Allow creation of unique style
  • Run faster without fallbacks and other extra scripting

I'm a complete Gameplay over Graphics kinda person but to lose 100% shader capacity in order to market to 10% more users (linux and mac) doesn't make much sense to me. You are hurting your the other 90% of your users by lowering their visual acuity to match the other 10%.

As well, not having shaders severely limits the size and visibility of your level due to LOD vs. FPS issues. A simple terrain shader for example can boost your FPS dramatically over a LOD terrain chunk. Not to mention the extra development time that taken by having to make textures that would normally be taken care of by shaders (this applies to all models not just terrain).

Hence for a 3D MMO, Windows w/ Shaders plz.

Well, most likely, if the game is also designed for linux, freeBSD, Solaris or other non-DirectX machines (aka, it uses OpenGL), it's most likely to still support shaders.

I'm all with multiplatforming, because I use linux myself too, even though I game with Windows, at least most of the time.

multiOS, there are enough other ways to make a game pretty without shaders.

If gameplay is good then I am all for it. Though these days, good luck getting any interest in your game from the majority without next-gen looks. Even WOW is slowly updating it's engine (but then again, Blizzard always makes shitty engines and their artists make amazing art.. as always) but they won't go overboard because their art department saves them everywhere.

Linux & Mac both support openGL so there's no reason not to support shaders.

Yeah, if you're looking for an excuse why not to support shaders, then just say you want to support even the worst of hardware. grin wink

I agree. But I also vote multiOS because I am for getting people to use Linux as much as possible.

Thanks so far.

Just as sidenote, i know it's possible to use shaders with openGL but there are reasons why i (probably) can't use them on a multiOS game. So please just accept that fact.
