I can run Lightwave, ZBrush, BodyPaint and many other tools on Mac but not on Linux. Though I wonder why this is the case. I read that Mac is some kind of a Linux system. Mac is actually more some kind of Windows because Microsoft licensed a big bunch of things from Apple, up to this day it still shares a lot of uhm 'common knowledge' from the Windows 1.0 to 3.0 era and later. But you're right when it comes to Linux, I don't understand either why many of the developers of the programs you've mentioned don't look a bit more seriously into Linux-ports. There's probably a bigger market ever since Microsoft's Vista caused much disappointment and buying a completely new PC to get a hold of the Mac OS and so on is usually too expensive. Cheers

Today I wondered about Windows in comparison to modern games. Many engines (i.g. Unreal 3) start the game even if not all assets are loaded. Some textures and remote zones are loaded in background. The next C4 version can do that and even the latest Atlas terrain of Torque Advanced can stream terrain data.
But why is this not possible in Windows? Some services are loaded after windows launch but they block the entire system. It is not possible to work if there is still some kind of "background" loading.
Should windows programmers learn from game engine developers?
