Hello,

long time ago, I worked with Softimage on an SGI Workstation.
Later I bought Cinema 4D Go and upgraded to Cinema 4D 5 XL.
What follows was Blender (you had to buy it that time wink ), GameSpace, and some smaller tools like AC3D, Milkshape and others. I used the tools to convert between file formats and to get the texture coordinates into the exported models.

But this is some years ago.

The workflow from Cinema 4D XL to Gamestudio mdl was complex and several tools where involved.

I am looking for a single 3D Modelling/Rendering/Animating Package with direct export as MDL (with a plugin if needed).

TrueSpace is available for free
Blender is free, also

Both Modeller are very different from Cinema 4D XL in terms of User Interface, Workflow, etc.

When I started modelling, it was simply to toy around and render some small animation clips...

It is a completly different story to create a game model with polygon budget.

Which 3D Package would you suggest me to dive into?
Most importent info: I am not going to spend money on that.

I plan to upgrade my Photoshop license, which will eat up some money. But it would be nice, if the Modeller supports .psd files with layers smile

Is it possible to work with one tool to
- model
- texture
- animate
- export to Gamestudio

Sorry for this long text, but I don't want to try all tools available to see which workflow is not working ( like: it does all I need, but lacks bone animation export)

Best regards,
slacer

Yes, it is possible to model, texture and animate and then export to Gamestudio. It is easy now since Gamestudio supports fbx. You can just take whatever you wants (Blender, Lightwave, C4D, Maya, Max, Fragmotion) and export via FBX to Gamestudio.

There are some native MDL plugins (for Blender and Lightwave) but you dont really need them anymore.

Try Milk Shape. You can export from it model with animations and textures!!! I never try to make model in Milk Shape but for animations it not bad smile

Yeah, but Milk Shape it very easy to learn. I never animate models myself before, I started with it. And animation can be imported with bones! From 3Ds max for example the animation will be converted in to vertex animation.

well, if you don't want to spend any money then there aren't that many options. i would use blender. it has much better animation features than truespace and i also like its interface a lot more than the weird and clumsy truespace one. smile

it still can make sense to use the mdl exporter over fbx. it often causes less problems than the complex fbx format.

I was not sure if there are problems exporting models from blender to mdl.

In a former project, our animator had some problems exporting bone animations from MAX to mdl. While it was possible, he had to rework some some things like a super hero cape and we simply had to skip some anims, because it was not possible to export them together with other anims in the same model.

It was possible to export cube with gamespace, but it was pain to try something more complex.

If you say it is possible to export bone animations from blender as mdl (using your plugin) or to export complex anims as fbx to use them with med, I am happy smile

Blender seems to be the tool, I just wanted to hear if there might be a showstopper during export.

Or you may try CharacterFX it free, and you can export model with bone animations in to MED but, in CharacterFX you will have to export in to milkshape format ASCII, and import in MED from it. Thats simple easy smile

@Maga: thank you, I know this workflow smile
There was a time, I bought lot of low price tools to fill the gaps between C4D and GameStudio.

Thank you all for your help

tutorial by Quadraxas for exporting models to FBX from Max(you could use any modeling tool that can export to FBX like Maya, probably) and then importing it to MED with bones animations. great tut! smile
