No. This was in the past. Today almost all highres models are finished in ZBrush. The modeling tools differ. Today many artists use Silo as a modeler, more and more are using Modo. Maya is well known because of the good character animation set. Max is just an all-in-one package, a bit patch work, not perfect in every area, but complete.

But especially for high end models Max is not the best alternative though it is well known because of its age and because of the wide warez distribution.

Yea that's probably true and I hear that alot on the forums, but if you look at the galleries on cgsociety and cgchannel the images are almost exclusivly max or maya with zbrush and photoshop. The art work posted there is usually much better than the best posted on the websites for silo and modo.

@lordmoggy... if you are still thinking about getting carrara 7 they just sent me an email and it is on sale again if you join the platinum club... and that membership is discounted as well.

Before I bought maya (a long time ago), I weighed in on Max also, and noted that it was very similar to maya. The problem with max was that there had to be a lot of different plug-ins in order to make one package. I chose maya over max because it was nicely integrated into one app. Now I use silo for modeling and zbrush for finish, but still use maya for animation.

Plus at the time max was being used more for games and maya was for cinema-type stuff, but that doesnt matter now. The only thing that matters about games for modeling is that you can make polygonal models quickly and put normal maps on them. Just about all packages let you do that.

I love blender like everyone else(should) but blender doesnt support n-sided polygons and thats a problem for me.

As a rule though I just dont like max, I have no idea why...

^ You bought Maya just for animation? (considering there are better animating tools out there)

Can you explain which tools you have in mind?

Regarding the CG-society images: You will find the most impressive images at the ZBrush forums, no matter what tool you used before bringing the mesh to ZBrush, even MED oder Wings3d could be used for that.

Max is very old and widely spread among warez users. Of course you will find more images rendered in Max and finished in Photoshop.
