Even i have Blender installed. And i hate its UI with a passion, and just use it from time to time for some conversions. What makes you think that my installation counts Blender as a good animation tool then?

And next point: this propaganda comes from Blendernation ...

Well just because it's from blendernation does not mean it does not have factual bases. Also I'm well aware the amount of copies means nothing when judging the actual product.

Basing what is number one on how many is installed is not really fair. If an app is free, then it will be installed all over the place. Period. MAX, despite its price, is still the most used 3D software for games, architectural renderings and animations and a slew of other professional projects. I use other software, but I cannot deny these facts. What if Autodesk were to make the same claim, but count all the warez versions installed? Would that help them move up the scale toward #1? Shall we compare completed, professional animated projects between Blender and other applications (MAX, Lightwave, Project Messiah, etc)? Where would Blender be then?

By the way: I also think that MAX costs too much, but I understand why it does. The 3D market is really fairly small. Despite how much of it we see these days (ads, movies, etc) it is still a niche market. As a result, a large company like Autodesk needs to keep the revenue coming in to pay for all their programmers, marketing people and general bills. On top of that, they certainly want to make a profit! What company does not? In fact, it seems that other 3D companies may be increasing the cost for a seat to use their applications. This includes Newtech (Lightwave) and Luxology (Modo). While this has not be set in stone, it has been discussed. Smaller numbers of users demand higher prices in order for the company to be profitable.

Lastly, on the price issue, since the majority of companies that use a product like 3DS MAX work on fairly high-budget projects, $3500 is not a great expense. Typically the price of one seat is already profitable by the down payment on one project. Yes, it is high for hobbyists, but that is not Autodesk's target.

@tiles: the blender interface will change with the next version. I hate many gui's too, like lightwave's for example.

@dan silverman: I think carrara has the most well rounded 3d app for the price and blender too once it changes its gui! as for wings3d this is a very fast modeler and simple for the beginner. Silo has a great price point for a modeler and also so does hexagon.

If you follow this path as a hobby game developer or high end developer you will be much better off than following the path of 3ds Max, lightwave or modo etc.....because in the end price does matter no matter what your pay packet.

@inestical: dont pull a testical the facts are outside blender also!

But there will be always the sob who wants the so called best of everything!

Blender is very good once you learn it. I avoided blender for a very long time because the GUI is very intimidating. I will admit that if I even had the money I wouldn't spend 3500$ on Max just on principle. Sorry but that's just too much. I mean I spent the 900$ on 3dgs but in my opinion you get alot in return. Max, to me, isn't worth the 3k, period.

I agree with you. It might be different for a 3d vis studio but it makes much sense for a game developer to invest into a fitting but more affordable tool.

But I also understand why many devs are looking intensively towards Max: It just has the most game engine exporters and many extra tools for game devs.

By the way: You have to pay only something around 3k for it but here in Europe they even want something around 5k for Max. I can get a brand new (small) car for this amount of money.

yes its all about profit in this sad world. Carrara proves a point about being cost effective, and throwing everthing in to make you happy. Thats why i am seriously considering buying this package. With collada support and fbx support etc.... you would be hard pressed and crazy not too!

I will be even more happy when 3d gamestudio supports collada.

Even carrara's Gui is more interesting and very usable!

My money is on Carrara 7 and the future with this app!

cheers Moggy

I have Blender installed as well, and I still use Max. Actually, every new update I install Blender just to compare it with max and mostly, expecting some UI changes. But yeah, Max is overpriced becuase developers need it and can actually use it without loosing brain cells just trying to figure out the interface. :P

On the side note, I DO hope that Blender comes out with updated UI because even upgrading Max licensing isn't exactly cheap every new version (not that you should, but some plugin devs drop support for old Max versions).

Well I agree that the number of installs does not mean that Blender has knocked off autodesk, thats like saying solitaire is the most popular computer game because it is installed on every PC.

I will risk being flamed and say that I like Blender's UI, and hope they do not change it. I tried Carrara recently and thought all the mouse clicking was slow. Of course I am not a trained or professional modeler so my opinion means very little.

When determining the "worth" of Max or Maya I would say that 99% of the high end art work is done in max or maya. For low poly game models it may not make much difference which modeler you use but it apparently does for high poly high rez images. It may be possible to do that work in Carrara, truespace or blender but it is just not being done.

I wouldn't put to much money on Carrara. They seem to be mostly focusing on poser content at the moment. The true autodesk killers will probably be truespace and sketchup. It depends on how much microsoft and google want the low poly market. And blender will rule the freeware/linux crowd forever.
