No, seriously though, a divorce of ideologies isn't going to change a thing. What really causes all the issues are people in power, that wish to stay in power or at least make sure they'll end up somewhere nice after their political careers are long over.
Lots of things behind the scenes happen without much common sense or ideology-related motivation involved, simply because people don't want a certain change when it hurts them because they are knee deep in a personal interest conflict and therefore simply won't vote the way the public expects them to based on their alleged ideology.
That's not entirely true, it's not really the people in power per say it's the people who are drawing from the government (Social security). The problem is that these people are taking from the budget, not the politicians that make stupid ideas (GW) although they contribute a bit to it. The problem is that we live in too high a standard and because of that our country is falling apart starting with finance.

Hmmm, yeah, but we've got social security as well though and it doesn't seem to bankrupt our country. Of course, our country is very small.
I agree on living on a too high a standard, I'm thinking the same is true for a lot of western countries.
The whole reason why the car industry is taking huge blows as we speak is because a lot of people tend to buy cars with borrowed money, creating a bubble that obviously could burst any moment. The whole industry has been programmed to make way too much cars basically, same is true for a few other industries.
