Lukas sums it up very well.
A lot of families were divided by the border.
There was a diffuse, scared atmosphere in both countries.

I can speak only for the "left" side, to be inline with your style. smile

I was born and I live in the so called "Fulda Gap", an important region during the cold war.

This influenced me a lot.

That's not entirely true, it's not really the people in power per say it's the people who are drawing from the government (Social security). The problem is that these people are taking from the budget, not the politicians that make stupid ideas (GW) although they contribute a bit to it. The problem is that we live in too high a standard and because of that our country is falling apart starting with finance. laugh

Hmmm, yeah, but we've got social security as well though and it doesn't seem to bankrupt our country. Of course, our country is very small.

I agree on living on a too high a standard, I'm thinking the same is true for a lot of western countries.

The whole reason why the car industry is taking huge blows as we speak is because a lot of people tend to buy cars with borrowed money, creating a bubble that obviously could burst any moment. The whole industry has been programmed to make way too much cars basically, same is true for a few other industries.
